After having worked in a number of different musical settings, super bassist Scott Colley and top saxophonist Benjamin Koppel, two long time friends and music associates, have finally teamed up in a setting of their dreams – the duo.
Jazz is an art based on communication and dialogue. Between musicians on stage, and between the artists and the audience. And who better to preserve and develop the art form of jazz than two of the most exquisite and eminent virtuosoes on the scene today – Colley and Koppel.
Standing on the shoulders of friends from an earlier generation, namely Danish bass legend Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen and saxophone innovator Lee Konitz, Colley and Koppel are inspired by two historic saxophone/bass-duo albums: the unforgettable Lee Konitz/Red Mitchell album ”I Concentrate on You” (1976) and the equally amazing Archie Shepp/Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen album, ”Looking at Bird” (1980).
Both demonstrate the incredible potential a duo formation can offer when in the hands of the right musicians.
NYC based Scott Colley, five-year Herbie Hancock Group bassist, is one of the most in-demand bass players on the international jazz scene today. He began his career playing with jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie and Carmen McRae, and has worked with the who’s who in jazz, as well as releasing eight albums as a leader.
COPENHAGEN based Benjamin Koppel, one of the most award-winning saxophonists of his generation, has 50 albums to his name and has worked and recorded with jazz greats like Paul Bley, Phil Woods and Randy Brecker. His long-time musical relationship with pianist Kenny Werner has produced more than 10 albums with names like Lionel Loueke, Bobby Watson and Joe Lovano.
Together, Scott Colley and Benjamin Koppel have worked intensively with a trio since 2012, the Koppel-Colley-Blade Collective together with drummer Brian Blade. The trio has two albums to its name and a third recording with a symphony orchestra is soon to be released.
Colley and Koppel have an immediate and almost telepathic mutual music understanding and their collaboration have led them to collaborations with the likes of Lee Konitz, Jim Hall, John Abercrombie, Al Foster, and many others. They like to challenge each other with new compositions written especially for their individual sound and approach, and both enjoy working in the creative space between thoroughly composed and freely improvised music.
In 2018 they will release a number of CDs together with musicians including Jack deJohnette, Ralph Alessi, John Patitucci and Kenny Werner as well as new trio releases with the Koppel-Colley-Blade Collective.
But this time they are out on their own – as a duo with only their two instruments and their great musicality and deep musical friendship to accompany them. And thus everyone is in for a treat, when two giant music forces join on the stage to further explore and develop the art of music-based communication.
Nachdem sie bereits in verschiedenen Konstellationen und Projekten zusammen gearbeitet haben, haben sich der Super-Bassist Scott Colley und der Top-Saxofonist Benjamin Koppel – zwei langjährige Freunde und musikalische Partner – nun endlich als Duo zusammengefunden. Ein Setting, von dem beide schon länger geträumt haben.
Jazz ist eine Kunstform, die auf Kommunikation und Dialog als Grundprinzipien beruht. Sowohl zwischen den Musikern auf der Bühne als auch zwischen den Künstlern und dem Publikum. Und wer könnte diese Grundprinzipien des Jazz besser bewahren und weiterentwickeln als zwei der herausragendstenen und virtuosesten Musiker der heutigen, internationalen Szene – Scott Colley und Benjamin Koppel?
Ihr Duo-Projekt ist inspieriert von zwei jazzhistorisch bedeutsamen Saxofon-/ Bass-Duo-Alben: Vom unvergesslichen Lee Konitz/Red Mitchell Werk, ”I Concentrate on You” (1976), und vom genauso umwerfenden Archie Shepp/Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen Album, ”Looking at Bird” (1980). Colley und Koppel demonstrieren im Duo und in Anlehnung an die großen Musiker einer vorausgehenden Generation ihr unglaubliches Potential!
Der in NYC lebende Scott Colley war fünf Jahre lang Bassist der Herbie Hancock Group und ist einer der meist gefragten Akteure der aktuellen internationalen Jazzszene. Seine Karriere startete er als Sideman für Dizzy Gillespie und Carmen McRae und weitere, einflussreiche Namen! Er selbst hat als Bandleader acht eigene Alben veröffentlicht.
Der in Kopenhagen lebende Benjamin Koppel, einer der meist ausgezeichneten Saxofonisten seiner Generation, ist auf insgesamt 50 Alben zu hören und hat dabei mit Jazz-Giganten wie Paul Bley, Phil Woods und Randy Brecker im Studio und auf der Bühne gestanden. Allein aus seiner intensiven musikalischen Beziehung zum Pianisten Kenny Werner sind 10 Alben hervorgegangen – in Kooperation mit Künstlern wie Lionel Loueke, Bobby Watson und Joe Lovano.
Seit 2012 arbeiten die beiden im Trio und eng zusammen mit Schlagzeuger Brian Blade. Unter dem Namen Koppel-Colley-Blade Collective haben sie bereits zwei Alben veröffentlicht und ein drittes, gemeinsam mit Sinfonie-Orchester eingespieltes, wird bald veröffentlicht.
Colley und Koppel haben ein direktes und beinahe telepathisches, gegenseitiges Verständnis von Musik. Ihre erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit hat zu weiteren Kooperationen mit Künstlern wie Lee Konitz, Jim Hall, John Abercrombie, Al Foster und vielen anderen geführt. Die beiden mögen es, sich gegenseitig mit neuen Kompositionen, die sie extra für ihren individuellen Duo-Sound und -Ansatz schreiben, herauszufordern. Beide genießen es, sich im kreativen Zwischenraum von komponierter und frei improvisierter Musik zu bewegen.
Für 2018 gibt es gute Aussichten: Die beiden werden eine ganze Menge an Veröffentlichungen präsentieren, darunter Alben mit Jack deJohnette, Ralph Alessi, John Patitucci und Kenny Werner, wie auch der bereits oben genannte Release des Koppel-Colley-Blade Collective.
An diesem Abend kommen sie als Duo mit ihren beiden Instrumenten, ihrer großen Musikalität und ihrem tiefen, freundschaftlichen Verständnis füreinander zu uns ins BIX. Die beiden weltweit renommierten Giganten live auf der Bühne zu erleben, wie sie mit ihren Instrumenten miteinander kommunizieren und interagieren, ist ein einmaliges Ereignis und unser Highlight zu Jahresbeginn, das man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte!
