VIPER`S DRAG is dedicated to play Thomas "Fats"Wallers music, his own compositions as well as some cool tunes of his repertoire. Due to the special lineup ( trumpet, altosax, bass, drums, no piano ) the band has a new and fresh approach, classic and catchy swing played with a modern attitude.
Thomas Waller was an outstanding and extremely gifted musician and composer, who revolutionized the stride-piano style and composed numerous songs , some of them becoming all-time-standards like "Honeysuckle Rose" or "Ain`t Misbehavin`".
He was the first one to play jazz on organs and he also was the first one to compose a jazz waltz, the famous "Jitterbug Waltz".
And he was so famous that he has even been hijacked by Al Capones gang to play on his birthday party !
One might wonder which kind of musician he would have been without the racist society of that time, as most people don`t know that he loved and recorded classical music, which has never been released, cause black people were rather supposed to be the clowns in the music-circus . A journalist once stated that the special humor of guys like him was nothing else than their way to deal with their situation and control their pain by ironizing it.
VIPER`S DRAG wants to recall the special energy and power of this music, remembering also the troubles our predecessors had to go through, and in deep love and respect for the man who created it, Thomas Waller.
VIPER`S DRAG haben sich mit der Musik von Thomas "Fats" Waller auseinandergesetzt, seinen Kompositionen und Interpretationen .Von vornherein ging es aber darum, einen frischen und eigenständigen Zugang zu finden, was einer der Gründe für das besondere Line-up ohne Piano war.
Waller war ein außergewöhnlicher und hochbegabter Musiker und Komponist, der die Technik des Stride-Piano Stils zu nie gehörter Virtuosität trieb, als erster
Jazzmusiker die Orgel benutzte, den ersten bekannten Jazzwalzer komponierte, den "Jitterbug Waltz" , und der Nachwelt einige der beliebtesten Standards hinterließ, die man
im "Great American Songbook" finden kann.
Er splelte in Hollywood-Musicals mit und war sogar so berühmt, daß er von Al Capones Gang gekidnapped wurde, um auf dessen Party zu spielen.
Nichtsdestoweniger hatte er Zeit seines Lebens mit den Auswüchsen des allgegenwärtigen Rassismus zu kämpfen.
All das spiegelt sich, samt seiner ungeheuren Spielfreude, in seiner Musik .
VIPER`S DRAG holen die besondere Power und den speziellen Witz dieser Musik in die Gegenwart. Mit viel Liebe und großem Respekt für die besonderen Musiker, die den Jazz geprägt haben, wird die Musik dieser Zeit wieder zum Leben erweckt und mit frischer Energie aufgeladen.

EINTRITT
Einer der Gründe, die den Zig Zag Jazzclub so einzigartig machen, ist, dass er der erste und einzige Jazzclub der Welt ist, dem es gelingt nur durch freiwilligem Eintritt/Crowdfunding Events von Weltklasse zu finanzieren. Und wie machen wir das? Ganz einfach. Während der Konzertpause geben wir bekannt, dass wir Geld einsammeln werden. Bei den meisten Konzerten (außer Jam Sessions) informieren wir unsere Kunden, dass ein Beitrag von ungefähr 15 Euro es uns erlaubt die Musiker gerecht zu bezahlen. Manche geben dabei mehr und andere weniger... und das ist auch in Ordnung. Wir haben auf diese Weise schon Hunderte Konzerte organisiert.
ENTRANCE FEES
One of the reasons that makes the zig zag jazz club so unique is that it is the first and only jazz club in the world that manages to finance world class events through a crowd funding concept. How do we do it? Its quite simple… during the break of the concert we make an announcement regarding the collection for the evening. For most concerts (excluding the jam session) we inform our customers that a fee of around 15€ per person will allow us to fairly compensate the musicians. Some people give more and some give less… and that´s ok… we ´ve already successfully promoted hundreds of concerts like this!!!
