ACT CD Release - „Tour d´Horizon“ - From Brubeck to Zawinul
More than 20 instruments on stage, but just three musicians: David Helbock, Outstanding Artist Award Winner in Austria, mainly plays on instruments with keys. Johannes Bär does all the brass, from trumpet to bassflügelhorn and tuba and Andreas Broger plays wind-instruments like saxophones, clarinets and flutes.
For their new program, which was released as a CD on the renowned Label ACT Music, David Helbock got inspired by his favorite jazzpianoplayers and arranged their most famous tunes for this special line-up. So new, exciting versions of Watermelon Man by Herbie Hancock or Bolivia by Cedar Walton emerged - but also soft, atmospheric pieces like Keith Jarrett´s My Song shine like new.
Over the years „Random/Control“ has developed a really distinct bandsound. Always different raw material - Austrian folkmusic, original compositions (in 2009 David Helbock had a big compositional project, where he wrote one piece every day for a whole year) and now these „Pianoplayer´s Hits", the band always sounds like „Random/Control“ - a ride on the rollercoaster for the ear and the eye.
Or like Roland Spiegel from the bavarian radio wrote already years ago: "...I think this musician with his „pianocap“ is one of the most exciting players of the young european jazz scene. The listener experiences something new when David Helbock plays. And it ́s never „top-heavy“ music – it ́s music that thrills the body and the mind..."

Mehr als zwei Dutzend Instrumente auf der Bühne, aber nur drei Musiker: David Helbock beschränkt sich weitgehend auf solche mit Tasten. Vogelwild die beiden unter anderem am Salzburger Mozarteum ausgebildeten Bläser. Johannes Bär ist fürs Blech zuständig, von Trompete über Bassflügelhorn bis zu hin zu Alphorn und Tuba. Andreas Broger spielt die Holzblasinstrumente: Saxophone, Klarinetten, Flöte.
Für die aktuelle CD, die beim renommierten Label ACT Music erschienen ist, hat sich David Helbock bei seinen Lieblingsjazzpianisten bedient und immer deren bekanntestes Stück arrangiert. So erklingen spannende, groovige neue Versionen von Watermelon Man (Herbie Hancock) oder Bolivia (Cedar Walton) aber auch ruhige, die Seele ansprechende Stücke wie My Song (Keith Jarrett) und viele andere.
Über die Jahre hat sich ein ganz eigenständiger Bandsound entwickelt und egal was David Helbock als Ausgangsmaterial wählt - ob wie in der Vergangenheit österreichische Volksmusik oder auch viele Eigenkompositionen (David Helbock hatte 2009 ein großes Kompositionsprojekt, wo er für ein Jahr lang jeden Tag ein neues Stück geschrieben hat) und jetzt eben diese „Pianoplayer´s Hits“ - Die Band klingt immer wie Random/Control - eine Achterbahnfahrt der Gefühle - Musik fürs Ohr und Spannendes fürs Auge oder wie Roland Spiegel vom Bayerischen Rundfunk schon vor vielen Jahren treffend formulierte:

ENTRANCE FEES
One of the reasons that makes the zig zag jazz club so unique is that it is the first and only jazz club in the world that manages to finance world class events through a crowd funding concept. How do we do it? Its quite simple… during the break of the concert we make an announcement regarding the collection for the evening. For most concerts (excluding the jam session) we inform our customers that a fee of around 15€ per person will allow us to fairly compensate the musicians. Some people give more and some give less… and that´s ok… we ´ve already successfully promoted hundreds of concerts like this!!!
EINTRITT
Einer der Gründe, die den Zig Zag Jazzclub so einzigartig machen, ist, dass er der erste und einzige Jazzclub der Welt ist, dem es gelingt nur durch freiwilligem Eintritt/Crowdfunding Events von Weltklasse zu finanzieren. Und wie machen wir das? Ganz einfach. Während der Konzertpause geben wir bekannt, dass wir Geld einsammeln werden. Bei den meisten Konzerten (außer Jam Sessions) informieren wir unsere Kunden, dass ein Beitrag von ungefähr 15 Euro es uns erlaubt die Musiker gerecht zu bezahlen. Manche geben dabei mehr und andere weniger... und das ist auch in Ordnung. Wir haben auf diese Weise schon Hunderte Konzerte organisiert.
