Sensibilität, Klarheit und mitreißende Rhythmik definieren den Sound des Alexandra Ivanova Trios, geleitet von der österreichischen Pianistin bulgarischer Herkunft. Mit Kontrabassist Niklas Lukassen und Schlagzeuger Nathan Ott navigiert das Trio zwischen Jazz, orientalischer klassischer Musik, ungeraden Rhythmen des Balkans und afrokubanischen Claven. Alexandras Kompositionen stammen von einer tiefen Reise ins Selbst. Ihre Arrangements von Folklore aus Aserbaidschan oder Island laden den Zuhörer ein die Welt aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln zu betrachten: aus dem Osten, dem Westen oder von einem Punkt dazwischen.

Das Trio tourte bereits durch Saudi-Arabien und Europa und eröffnete das renommierte Cairo Jazz Festival mit der Sängerin Lynn Adib (FR/SYR), die auch auf dem Titelsong ihres gefeierten Debut-Albums vertreten ist: "Beauty in Chaos ist ein fesselndes Album, das oft geheimnisvoll wirkt - was womöglich an der Verschmelzung kultureller Elemente liegt. Alexandra Ivanova ist eine in Berlin lebende österreichische Pianistin und Komponistin bulgarischer Herkunft. Während ihrer klassischen Ausbildung entdeckte Alexandra mit 16 Jahren Jazz für sich und studierte in Frankreich, bevor sie mehrere Jahre im Nahen Osten verbrachte. Ihren Stil entwickelte sie mit ihren multikulturellen Jazztrios, als Autodidakt, sowie mit ihrem Mentor Tarek Yamani. Als unkonventionelle Musikerin ist Alexandra eine Grenzgängerin zwischen Disziplinen, Kulturen und Genres. Sie vertiefte traditionelle afro-kubanische und orientalische klassische Musik u.A. mit Arturo O’Farrill, Ruy Lopez-Nussa, Alexis Bosch und Salman Gambarov. Alexandra erhielt das Jazz Arbeitsstipendium 2022 des Berliner Senats sowie das Stipendium des Musikfonds 2021. In ihrer jungen Karriere präsentierte sie ihre Musik im Reykjavik Jazz Festival, Stockwerk Graz, Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Programm des UNESCO International Jazz Day 2020, sowie auf internationalen Bühnen in Saudi Arabien, Frankreich, den Niederlanden, England und den VAE.

Niklas Lukassen verblüfft mit malerischem Sinn für instrumentale Lyrik gleichermaßen auf dem Kontrabass und auf der Bassgitarre.  Nach seiner Rückkehr aus New York, wo er unter Ron Carter sein Masterstudium abschloss, lebt er heute zwischen London und Berlin. Dabei etabliert er sich mit zunehmend polarisierender Präsenz in der aktuellen Europäischen Jazz Szene. Lukassen bewegt sich in unterschiedlichsten musikalischen Welten und hatte das Privileg, mit Größen wie Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mike Stern, Jorge Rossy, Oz Noy, Will Vinson, Jo Lawry und zuletzt Norma Winstone & Gwilym Simcock aufzutreten. Mit seinem bald auf dem Label Heartcore Records erscheinenden Album Still Waters Run Deep ergründet er gemeinsam mit Ben Van Gelder, Kit Downes, Francesco Ciniglio und Gästen wie Kurt Rosenwinkel in vermeintlich stillen musikalischen Gewässern ungeahnte Tiefen.

Im Quartett des jungen Wahl-Berliners und dessen langjährigem Mentor und musikalischem Wegbegleiter Dave Liebman sorgte der junge Bandleader, Schlagzeuger und Komponist Nathan Ott mit seiner eigenen Vision 2016 erstmals für Aufsehen, indem er den Geist der Lighthouse-Edition der Elvin-Jones-Band der frühen 70er Jahre ins 21. Jahrhundert brachte. Seitdem hat er sich als ein überaus wacher und vitaler Impulsgeber bewährt, der es versteht, seine Dynamik im Dienst des jeweiligen musikalischen Zusammenhangs zu dosieren.

Dabei arbeitete er in seiner noch jungen Karriere mit Künstlern wie Dave Liebman, Richie Beirach, Tobias Delius, Jonas Westergaard, Rainer Böhm, Vladislav Sendecki oder Claus Stötter. Er hat bei Bill Elgart und Holger Nell in Deutschland sowie bei Adam Nussbaum, Greg Hutchinson und Billy Hart in den USA studiert, bevor es ihn nach Berlin zog, wo er seit Anfang 2019 lebt und arbeitet.

Sensitivity, clarity and captivating rhythms characterize the sound of the Berlin-based Alexandra Ivanova Trio led by the Austrian pianist and composer of Bulgarian roots. With Niklas Lukassen on double bass and Nathan Ott on drums, the trio navigates between Jazz, Oriental classical music, odd meters from the Balkan and Afro-Cuban claves. Alexandra's compositions stem from a deep journey into the self. Her arrangements of Oriental standards, Azeri and Icelandic folklore invite the listener to look at the world from different points of view: from the East, the West or from somewhere in between.

In February 2022, the trio played a tour in Saudi Arabia, after the captivating combination of Alexandra's original compositions and spoken word poems had already sparked the audience’s attention at various live shows in Europe (AT/NL/DE). In 2023 the trio recorded its debut album featuring guest vocalist Lynn Adib (FR/SYR) on the title track “Beauty in Chaos” which was a great success among listeners and critics. Alexandra Ivanova is a pluricultural pianist and composer, born in Austria with Bulgarian roots, and having called France, the Middle East and the Gulf her home. She was classically trained at the piano as a child and is primarily self-taught in jazz, performing with her jazz trios since the age of 16, before she found a mentor in autodidact Tarek Yamani at a later stage. Alexandra’s interest lies in polyrhythms, Bulgarian and Maqam-based music in conversation with jazz harmony and Afrocuban claves which she further deepened with Arturo O’Farrill Ruy Lopez-Nussa, Alexis Bosch und Salman Gambarov. Alexandra has earned the Jazz Scholarship from the Berlin Senate 2022 and a stipend from the German Music Fund 2021 for her composition work and research. In her young career, she has performed at the Reykjavik Jazz Festival, the Stockwerk Graz, the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Programme at UNESCO International Jazz Day 2020, as well as on international stages in Saudi Arabia, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.

Bassist Niklas Lukassen moves effortlessly between upright bass and bass guitar, enchanting with a painterly sense of instrumental lyricism. After completing his master’s studies in New York under the legendary Ron Carter, he now lives between London and Berlin, establishing a bold and growing presence in the European jazz landscape. Lukassen has performed in diverse musical settings with luminaries like Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mike Stern, Jorge Rossy, Oz Noy, Will Vinson, Jo Lawry, and most recently Norma Winstone & Gwilym Simcock. His upcoming album Still Waters Run Deep on Heartcore Records explores profound musical depths in seemingly quiet waters, featuring Ben van Gelder, Kit Downes, Francesco Ciniglio, and special guests including Kurt Rosenwinkel.

The young bandleader and drummer Nathan Ott was hailed by jazz experts since he released his debut album in 2016 with his quartet featuring Dave Liebman. He took the spirit of the Elvin-Jones Band’s Lighthouse-Edition from the 70s into the 21st century. Ever since, he established a name for his playing due to his vital musical inputs always dosing dynamics in the best interest the musical context. In his young career, Nathan Ott has collaborated with artists like Richie Beirach, Tobias Delius and Jonas Westergaard. He has studied with Bill Elgart and Holger Nell in Germany, as well as with Adam Nussbaum, Greg Hutchinson and Billy Hart in the USA, before he moved to Berlin in 2019 where he currently lives and works.
