Wenn der Jazz wieder groovt, wenn die Salsa nach der Knef klingt, sich der Soul in deutscher Sprache durch den Äther swingt und die Posaune dem türkischen Sprechgesang Paul-Linkisch zur Seite steht, dann sind wir wohl im neuen Berlin gelandet. Alfred Mehnert liegt völlig richtig, wenn er sein Projekt Berlin Metropol Orchestra nennt, denn diese Gruppe von Musikerinnen und Musikern aus aller Herren Länder verkörpert das, was diese Stadt so gerne wäre, und eigentlich doch schon längst ist: eine Metropole. Mehnert und seine Musiker sind, obgleich sich im Repertoire des Orchesters, neben vielen eigenen Kompositionen, Klassiker von Duke Ellington bis Nat King Cole befinden, im Jetzt zu Hause, an der Frontlinie einer neuen Kultur. Es sind dabei nicht nur junge Körper, die dem Groove des Orchesters verfallen; seine Musik ist tatsächlich Generationenübergreifend. Was nun dieses Metropol Orchestra auszeichnet, es zu einem Klangkörper neuen Typs macht, ist neben der - bei dieser Besetzung eigentlich selbstverständlichen - Spielkunst der Akteure, die Tatsache, dass hier kein undefinierbarer Multikulti-Sound entsteht, der die Herkunft der Musikerinnen und Musiker exotistisch ausstellt, sondern, dass in ihm die individuellen Klangfarben zu einer neuen eigen- einzigartigen Musik werden. Die Wurzeln sind natürlich noch erkennbar, warum sollte man sie auch verleugnen oder verschweigen? Sie werden aber mehr und mehr zu einer fernen Erinnerung, die nachhallen im neuen Sound der neuen Heimat, der in Deutschland wohl nur hier in der Metropole Berlin, entstehen konnte.

Alfred Mehnert
Gründer und Initiator. Ein Mensch unerschöpflicher Ideen und Kreativität. Alfred hat schon mit den Großen gespielt und von Jazz über Lateinamerikanisches bis zur elektronischen Musik eine unglaubliche Vielfalt bewiesen. Als Performer, Conferencier und Lyriker reicht sein Horizont vom nächtlichen Poetry-Slam in der Kreuzberger Kaschemme bis zur großen Bühne des Deutschen Theaters.

Tino Derado
Künstlerische Leitung. Unser Genie an den Tasten und der Komposition. Der gebürtige Münchner studierte am renommierten Berklee College of Music in Boston und an der New Yorker „New School for Music“, an der er 1995 mit Bachelor Degree abschloss. Während seines 13-jährigen Aufenthaltes in den USA wurde Tino Derado zu einem gefragten Mitglied in der Jazz und Latin-Szene und spielte Konzerte u.a. mit Gary Burton, Peter Erskine, Bob Moses, Randy Brecker, Bill Evans, Paul Winter, Dave Liebman, Jimmy Cliff, Frank Gambale, Jamey Haddad, Chiara Civello, Richard Bona, Matthew Garrison, Joe Chambers, Nils Langren, Jojo Meyer, Papo Vasquez, Orlando Marin Y Su Orchestra, Andy Gonzales, Adam Nussbaum und Fred Hersch.

Mayelis Guyat
Die Sängerin aus Guantánamo, Kuba, ist vielen in Berlin und Deutschlandweit als Salsa-Interpretin bekannt und ist die beliebteste und meist beschäftigte kubanische Sängerin dieser Stadt. Beim BMO zeigt sie, dass sie ebenfalls im Jazz zuhause ist. Sie brilliert auf Spanisch und Englisch, und darüber hinaus mit Textadaptionen großer Standards in ihrer neuen Heimatsprache , der deutschen Sprache.

Sören Fischer lebt seit 1985 in Berlin, wo er an der Hochschule der Künste Berlin bei David Friedman und Jerry Granelli studierte. Weiterhin bildete er sich in New York, Banff/Kanada und Gambia weiter. Fischer ist ein wandlungsfähiger Künstler, der sich in den verschiedensten musikalischen Situationen äußerst wohl fühlt: Er war Teil des Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, ist Mitglied der RIAS Big Band Berlin und der Bigband der Deutschen Oper Berlin. Auch ist er auf Alben von Lisa Bassenge, Jazzanova und Wolfgang Haffner zu hören. Weiterhin arbeitete er mit Ray Brown, Scorpions, James Morrison, Toots Thielemanns, Cyndi Lauper, Holly Cole, Till Brönner, Jim McNeely, Richie Beirach, Joe Gallardo, Aki Takase, Conny Bauer, Nils Petter Molvaer und vielen mehr.

Janko Lauenberger wuchs als Sohn zweier Sinti im Ost-Berliner Stadtteil Lichtenberg auf. Seit seiner Jugend musiziert er mit Gitarre bei verschiedenen musikalischen Gruppen und Bands. Seitdem er 16 Jahre alt ist, spielte er in der Gruppe Sinti Swing Berlin, die sein Vater Hans Lauenberger mit seinen Onkeln Fredi, Wilfried und Alfred Ansin gründete, zunächst Rhythmusgitarre, seit 2000 Sologitarre. Mit dieser Band ist er auch am Album Yiddish Troubadour von Karsten Troyke beteiligt.

Thiago Duarte ist ein Bassist aus Südbrasilien. In der lokalen Szene aktiv, hat er mit Namen wie Joao Donato, Egberto Gismonti, Joao Bosco, Airto Moreira und Flora Purim gespielt. Mit Flora und Airto wirkte er als elektrischer und akustischer Bassist bei den letzten Alben mit, darunter "If You Will" von Flora Purim, das für den Grammy 2022 in der Kategorie bestes Latin Jazz Album nominiert wurde.

When jazz grooves again, when salsa sounds like Knef, when soul swings its way through the ether in German and the trombone stands by the Turkish chant Paul-Linkisch, then we have probably landed in the new Berlin. Alfred Mehnert is absolutely right when he calls his project Berlin Metropol Orchestra, because this group of musicians from all over the world embodies what this city would like to be, and actually already is: Metropolis. Mehnert and his musicians, although the orchestra's repertoire includes many of their own compositions, classics from Duke Ellington to Nat King Cole Minden, are at home in the now, on the front lines of a new culture. It's not just young bodies that fall for the orchestra's groove; its music actually transcends generations. What distinguishes this Metropol Orchestra, what makes it a new type of orchestra, is, in addition to the players' art of playing - which is actually a matter of course with this line-up - the fact that no indefinable multicultural sound is created here, which exotically exposes the musicians' origins, but rather that in it the individual timbres become a new music that is unique in its own right. The roots are of course still recognizable, why should they be denied or concealed? But they become more and more a distant memory, echoing in the new sound of the new homeland, which in Germany could probably only be created here, in the metropolis of Berlin. Alfred Mehnert & Das Berlin Metropol Orchestra have found this sound.

Mayelis Guyat
The singer from Guantánamo, Cuba, is known to many in Berlin and throughout Germany as a salsa performer and is the most popular and busiest Cuban singer in this city. At BMO, she shows that she is also at home in jazz. She shines in Spanish and English, and beyond that with text adaptations of great standards in her new home language, German.

Janko Lauenberger grew up as the son of two Sinti in the East Berlin district of Lichtenberg. He has been playing guitar in various musical groups and bands since his youth. From the age of 16, he played rhythm guitar in the group Sinti Swing Berlin, which his father Hans Lauenberger founded with his uncles Fredi, Wilfried and Alfred Ansin, and has played solo guitar since 2000. With this band he is also involved in the album Yiddish Troubadour by Karsten Troyke.

Thiago Duarte is a bassist from southern Brazil. Active in the local scene, he has played with names such as Joao Donato, Egberto Gismonti, Joao Bosco, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. He has collaborated with Flora and Airto as electric and acoustic bassist on their latest albums, including "If You Will" by Flora Purim, which was nominated for the 2022 Grammy in the Best Latin Jazz Album category.
