Mit Ambrose Akinmusire kehrt einer der wichtigsten Trompeter und Komponisten des zeitgenössischen Jazz nach Berlin zurück. Ein vollkommen eigener Trompetensound und eine unverwechselbare kompositorische Handschrift haben ihm seit seinem Durchbruch vor knapp zwei Jahrzehnten eine Ausnahmestellung innerhalb seiner Generation eingebracht.
Für sein neues Quintett steht mit Sam Harris ein langjähriger musikalischer Weggefährte am Klavier. Mit Charles Altura an der Gitarre, Luca Alemanno am Bass und Timothy Angulo am Schlagzeug bringt Akinmusire eine herausragende Band mit in unsere Halle.
Ambrose Akinmusire wurde bereits mit 19 Jahren von Steve Coleman in dessen Five Elements geholt und studierte später am Thelonious Monk Institute unter anderem bei Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter und Terence Blanchard. 2007 gewann er die Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, 2011 erschien sein gefeiertes Blue-Note-Debüt „When the Heart Emerges Glistening“. Seither entwickelte Akinmusire seine Musik weit über klassische Jazzformen hinaus und arbeitete unter anderem mit Kendrick Lamar, Joni Mitchell, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran und Esperanza Spalding. Viermal wurde er bislang für einen Grammy nominiert.
Sam Harris ist seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt einer der engsten musikalischen Partner Akinmusires und wirkte an mehreren seiner wichtigsten Alben mit, darunter „The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier to Paint“, „A Rift in Decorum“, „Origami Harvest“ und „on the tender spot of every calloused moment“. Darüber hinaus arbeitete der Pianist unter anderem mit Melissa Aldana, Logan Richardson und Rudy Royston und veröffentlichte mehrere eigene Alben.
Charles Altura arbeitete unter anderem mit Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Terence Blanchard, Tom Harrell und Tigran Hamasyan. Mit Akinmusire war der Gitarrist bereits auf dem 2014 erschienenen Album „The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier to Paint“ zu hören.
Der italienische Bassist Luca Alemanno war der erste italienische Musiker, der für das renommierte Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance ausgewählt wurde. Er arbeitete unter anderem mit Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Lovano, Maria Schneider, Mark Giuliana, Stanley Jordan und Jerry Bergonzi.
Der aus Berkeley stammende Schlagzeuger und Komponist Timothy Angulo lebt in New York und arbeitete unter anderem mit Ambrose Akinmusire, Reggie Workman, Jeff Parker, Mulatu Astatke und Kamasi Washington. Außerdem ist er Mitglied der experimentellen Formation L’Rain.
With Ambrose Akinmusire, one of the most important trumpeters and composers in contemporary jazz returns to Zig Zag. A completely individual trumpet sound and an unmistakable compositional voice have given him an exceptional position within his generation since his breakthrough nearly two decades ago.
For his new quintet, Akinmusire is joined by longtime musical partner Sam Harris on piano, alongside Charles Altura on guitar, Luca Alemanno on bass and Timothy Angulo on drums – an outstanding band of musicians from today’s international jazz scene.
Ambrose Akinmusire was recruited by Steve Coleman for his Five Elements at just 19 and later studied at the Thelonious Monk Institute with musicians including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Terence Blanchard. In 2007, he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, followed in 2011 by his acclaimed Blue Note debut “When the Heart Emerges Glistening”. Since then, Akinmusire has taken his music far beyond conventional jazz forms and worked with artists including Kendrick Lamar, Joni Mitchell, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran and Esperanza Spalding. He has received four GRAMMY nominations to date.
Sam Harris has been one of Akinmusire’s closest musical partners for more than a decade and has appeared on several of his most important albums, including “The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier to Paint”, “A Rift in Decorum”, “Origami Harvest” and “on the tender spot of every calloused moment”. The pianist has also worked with musicians including Melissa Aldana, Logan Richardson and Rudy Royston and has released several albums as a leader.
