Andy Sheppard zählt seit nunmehr vier Jahrzehnten zu den herausragenden Saxophonisten Europas und ist eine feste Größe im internationalen Jazz. Kaum jemand vermag es wie Sheppard zwischen lyrischen Passagen und hartem Post-Bop zu jonglieren und dabei auch noch mitreißend und gefühlvoll zu komponieren. An diesem Abend besucht uns Sheppard mit seinem neu gegründete Trio, um seine Musik zu präsentieren, ein echtes Highlight!

In den 1980er- und 90er-Jahren machte sich Sheparrd, der mit 19 Jahre erste Erfahrungen im Profibereich sammelte, sowohl mit eigenen Bands als auch durch Auftritte mit Größen wie George Russell, Gil Evans, Carla Bley und anderen einen Namen. Seit einigen Jahren veröffentlicht Sheppard bei ECM Records – dort erscheinen seine stilprägenden Alben wie Trio Libero, Surrounded by Sea oder Romaria, die seinen Ruf als innovativer und poetischer Saxophonist festigen. Seine Musik ist eine Brücke zwischen Tradition und Moderne, zwischen individueller Improvisation und kollektiver Klangvision.

Rita Marcotulli ist eine der bedeutendsten Pianistinnen und Komponistinnen des europäischen Jazz. In ihrer langjährigen Karriere arbeitete sie mit Legenden wie Chet Baker, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Dewey Redman und vielen anderen zusammen. Sie bewegte sich dabei musikalisch zwischen Jazz, mediterranen Liedformen und Weltmusik

Michel Benita ist ein über Jahrzehnte etablierter Kontrabassist und Komponist, der mit seinem lyrischen Ton und feinfühligen Bassspiel zu den tragenden Säulen des europäischen Jazz zählt. Über die Jahre arbeitete er mit Größen wie Lee Konitz, Dewey Redman, Archie Shepp und vielen anderen zusammen. Als Bandleader veröffentlichte Benita mehrfach mit dem renommierten Label ECM Records, desweiteren war er Mitglied des Orchestre National de Jazz.

Tenor saxophonist Ben Kraef is one of Germany’s outstanding jazz musicians and presents with his trio a captivating blend of songs from the classic jazz repertoire alongside his own original compositions. The group’s style is shaped by influences such as Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Dewey Redman, Yusef Lateef, and Joe Lovano, allowing the full expressive range of the saxophone to unfold. With Phil Donkin and Paolo Orlandi, two of the most accomplished and sought-after musicians on the European jazz scene form the rhythm section of this creative and dynamic ensemble.

Ben Kraef is a German-Montenegrin saxophonist and composer based in Berlin. He graduated from the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin and earned a Master of Arts degree from the City College of New York in 2009, where he was awarded the Billie Stoller Scholarship in 2008 for outstanding academic and musical achievement. The list of internationally renowned artists with whom Ben has performed and recorded includes luminaries such as John Abercrombie, John Patitucci, Vincent Herring, Lalo Schifrin, Fred Hersch, Pee Wee Ellis, and Till Brönner, as well as pop groups like "Wir Sind Helden" and the HR and WDR Radio Big Bands. He is also a prizewinner in several national and international competitions, including the Biberach Jazz Prize, the Concours International de Jazz de Fribourg, and the Yamaha Saxophone Contest. Since 2021, Kraef has been teaching at the Jazz Institute Berlin.

Phil Donkin is one of the most versatile and distinctive musicians on today’s European jazz scene. His own projects are considered highly innovative and leave both audiences and fellow musicians inspired and amazed. When not leading his own bands, he can be heard with artists such as Oliver Steidle, Tom Challenger, Philipp Gropper, Frank Möbus, Kalle Kalima, Jim Black, Wanja Slavin, Johannes Enders, and Bastian Stein. Donkin has toured extensively across Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. In recent years, he has also collaborated with major international figures including John Abercrombie, Marc Copland, Ralph Alessi, Joey Baron, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Chris Speed, Dan Weiss, Ethan Iverson, and Bill Stewart. He currently lives in Berlin.

Paolo Orlandi is an Italian drummer and jazz educator. He studied in Milan and New York; in the latter city he shared the stage with the who's who of the scene, above all with bassist legend John Patitucci, who wrote about Paolo: "Paolo has always been a gifted, swinging, sensitive drummer and all around musician. He also possesses a brilliant mind and he is a great teacher." He has toured worldwide and is a highly esteemed sideman, as well as a professor of percussion at the Geneva Conservatory.
