Wenn der Jazz wieder groovt, wenn die Salsa nach der Knef klingt, sich der Soul in deutscher Sprache durch den Äther swingt und die Posaune dem türkischen Sprechgesang Paul-Linkisch zur Seite steht, dann sind wir wohl im neuen Berlin gelandet. Alfred Mehnert liegt völlig richtig, wenn er sein Projekt Berlin Metropol Orchestra nennt, denn diese Gruppe von Musikerinnen und Musikern aus allen Ländern verkörpert das, was diese Stadt so gerne wäre, und eigentlich doch schon längst ist: eine Metropole.

Was nun dieses Metropol Orchestra auszeichnet, ist, dass hier kein undefinierbarer Multikulti-Sound entsteht, der die Herkunft der Musikerinnen und Musiker exotistisch ausstellt, sondern dass hier die individuellen Klangfarben zu einer neuen, eigen- einzigartigen Musik werden. Die jeweiligen Wurzeln sind natürlich noch erkennbar – warum sollte man sie auch verleugnen oder verschweigen? Sie werden aber mehr und mehr zu einer fernen Erinnerung, die nachhallen im neuen Sound der neuen Heimat, der in Deutschland wohl nur hier in der Metropole Berlin entstehen konnte.

Alfred Mehnert
Gründer und Initiator des Berlin Metropol Orchestras. Alfred ist ein Mensch unerschöpflicher Ideen und Kreativität und hat als Perkussionist mit den Großen gespielt: Von Jazz über Lateinamerikanisches bis zur elektronischen Musik beweist er eine unglaubliche Vielfalt. Als Performer, Conférencier und Lyriker reicht sein Horizont vom nächtlichen Poetry-Slam in der Kreuzberger Kaschemme bis hin zur großen Bühne des Deutschen Theaters. Seit Winter 2023 nun gestaltet er seinen „Bürgermeister“-Abend in einer kleinen Kreuzberger Bar. Hier treffen Musiker:innen und Interpret:innen aller Genres aufeinander.

Batilas musikalische Mischung aus Jazz, Rock, Pop und zeitgenössischer kongolesischer Musik bringt Jung und Alt zusammen. Er wuchs mit einer Mischung aus urbaner kongolesischer Musik, Reggae, Rock und Pop auf und verarbeitet dieses frühe Lernen in Songs, die politische Themen über packende Rhythmen verhandeln. Sein Debütalbum Tatamana, das er mit der Band The DreamBus in Berlin, Paris und Kinshasa aufgenommen hat, kann als eine Reise durch Raum und Zeit verstanden werden: Es vermittelt zwischen den Städten und Musikkulturen ebenso wie es die Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart holt, um einen zukunftsweisenden Bantu-Soul-Sound zu formen.

Tino Derado
Europäischer Top-Pianist und darüber hinaus Komponist und musikalischer Leiter des BMO. Der gebürtige Münchner studierte am renommierten Berklee College of Music in Boston und an der New Yorker „New School for Music“, an der er 1995 mit dem Bachelor Degree abschloss. Während seines 13-jährigen Aufenthaltes in den USA wurde Tino Derado zu einem gefragten Mitglied in der Jazz- und Latin-Szene und spielte Konzerte u.a. mit Gary Burton, Peter Erskine, Bob Moses, Randy Brecker, Bill Evans, Paul Winter, Dave Liebman, Jimmy Cliff, Frank Gambale, Jamey Haddad, Chiara Civello, Richard Bona, Matthew Garrison, Joe Chambers, Nils Landgren, Jojo Meyer, Papo Vasquez, Orlando Marin y Su Orchestra, Andy Gonzales, Adam Nussbaum und Fred Hersch.

Zeigte schon in ihrer Kindheit die Tendenz und Begabung zur Musik. Bereits mit 11 Jahren wurde sie am nationalen Musik-Konservatorium in La Habana aufgenommen, in dem sie in klassischer Musik sowie in populärer afro-kubanischer Perkussion unterrichtet wurde. Sie war Mitgründerin der ersten und bekanntesten Frauen-Salsa-Bands aus Kuba „Anacaona“ und „Son Damas“, mit denen sie im zarten Alter von 16 Jahren auf Welttournee ging.
Seit 1996 lebt sie in Deutschland und spielt in verschiedensten Genres (kubanischer Musik, Latin Jazz, Rock, Pop, Funk, u.a.) deutschlandweit, europa- und weltweit. Katrina Martínez ist Schlagzeugerin und Perkussionistin auf internationalem Niveau und repräsentiert die neue Generation der großen Musiker:innen in Kuba.in Jazz Album nominiert wurde.

When jazz starts grooving again, when salsa echoes with hints of Hildegard Knef, when soul swings through the airwaves in German, and the trombone joins forces with Turkish rap in the spirit of Paul-Linkisch—then we’ve surely arrived in the new Berlin. Alfred Mehnert is absolutely right to call his project the Berlin Metropol Orchestra, because this group of musicians from all over the world embodies what this city aspires to be—and in truth, already is: a metropolis.

What makes the Metropol Orchestra special is that it doesn’t produce some undefined “multi-culti” sound that merely exoticizes the musicians’ origins. Instead, their individual tonal colors come together to create a truly unique new kind of music. Their roots are still recognizable, of course—why would anyone want to deny or hide them? But those roots are becoming distant echoes, resonating through the new sound of a new home, a sound that could probably only emerge here, in the metropolis of Berlin.

Alfred Mehnert
Founder and initiator of the Berlin Metropol Orchestra. Alfred is a man of boundless creativity and ideas. As a percussionist, he has played with some of the greats. From jazz to Latin to electronic music, he showcases stunning versatility. As a performer, master of ceremonies, and poet, his range spans from late-night poetry slams in Kreuzberg bars to the grand stage of the Deutsches Theater. Since winter 2023, he has been hosting his “Mayor” evenings in a small Kreuzberg bar, where musicians and performers of all genres come together.

Batila's musical blend of jazz, rock, pop and contemporary Congolese music brings together young and old. He grew up with a mixture of urban Congolese music, reggae, rock and pop and processes this early learning in songs that deal with political issues through gripping rhythms. His debut album Tatamana, which he recorded with the band The DreamBus in Berlin, Paris and Kinshasa, can be understood as a journey through space and time: It mediates between cities and musical cultures just as much as it brings the past into the present to form a forward-looking Bantu soul sound.

One of Europe’s top pianists, and also the composer and musical director of the BMO. Showed musical talent and drive from early childhood. At just 11 years old, she was accepted into the National Conservatory of Music in Havana, where she trained in classical music as well as popular Afro-Cuban percussion. She co-founded Cuba’s first and most famous all-female salsa bands, Anacaona and Son Damas, with whom she began touring the world at the young age of 16.
Since 1996, she has lived in Germany and performs in a wide range of genres (Cuban music, Latin jazz, rock, pop, funk, etc.) throughout Germany, Europe, and internationally. Katrina Martínez is a drummer and percussionist of international caliber and represents the new generation of major Cuban musicians.
