Buena Vista Social Club – wer kennt ihn nicht, den klangvollen Namen eines der erfolgreichsten kubanischen Musikprojekte aller Zeiten. Nicht erst durch den legendären Dokumentarfilm von Wim Wenders gelangte das im Jahr 1996 erschienene Album mit einem Großaufgebot von Stars der Musikszene in Kuba zu Weltruhm.

Die Musik des Albums wird kein geringerer als der Sänger Sergio Medina gemeinsam mit einer hochkarätigen Auswahl von Musikern der Berliner Szene zelebrieren und den Geist des Projekts zum Leben erwecken. Näher dran geht es kaum: Sergio Medina hat mit vielen der am Buena Vista Social Club beteiligten Musikern zusammengearbeitet. Er ist in Santiago de Cuba geboren und verbrachte einen großen Teil seines bisherigen Lebens in Habana. Als Sänger, Komponist und Texter arbeitete er in allen Bereichen der kubanischen Musik mit unterschiedlichen Bands und in verschiedenen Projekten. 1984 begann er zunächst als Tontechniker bei “Conjunto Los Karachi”, in dieser Zeit entstanden erste eigene Kompositionen, die ins Repertoire aufgenommen wurden. Seit 1989 war er in zahlreichen Ensembles aktiv: Grupo Mackandal, Grupo Afrocaribe, Orquesta Los Filin, Orquesta Siglo XX, Orquesta Havana All Star, Orquesta Islacaribe, Orquesta Son Caturla, Havana Son Light, Amaranto Fernandez y su grupo. Seit 2019 lebt und arbeitet Sergio Medina in Berlin.

Im Zig Zag Jazz Club ist Medina regelmäßig mit der Salsa Jazz Fusion-Band „Havana Berlin Express“ zu erleben, deren Kontrabassist und Ko-Produzent Urs Johnen ebenfalls an diesem Abend zu hören sein wird. Johnen studierte Kontrabass in Stuttgart und in Weimar und ist heute in Berlin, im Schwarzwald und auf Mallorca zuhause. Er arbeitet mit Projektorchestern und Ensembles im Jazz- und Klassikbereich.

Regis Molina ist ein Musiker und Komponist aus Havanna, Kuba, der derzeit in Berlin lebt. Er ist ein Multiinstrumentalist, der Alt- und Baritonsaxophon, Flöte, Klarinette und afrokubanische Perkussion spielt. Molinas Leidenschaft und Hingabe zur Musik haben ihm mehrere Auszeichnungen eingebracht, wie beispielsweise 2007 den Latin Grammy und ihn weltweit mit renommierten Musikern und Bands wie Till Brönner, Kurt Rosenwinkel oder Jeff “Tain” Watts auftreten lassen.

Felix Mross ist ein klassisch ausgebildeter Pianist mit einem breiten stilistischen Spektrum. Er erhielt mehrere Bundespreise bei „Jugend musiziert“ sowie den WDR-Klassikpreis im Jahr 2004. Als Solist und Begleiter trat er unter anderem in der Carnegie Hall in New York auf. In den letzten Jahren hat er seinen künstlerischen Fokus zunehmend auf Jazz und lateinamerikanische Stilrichtungen gelegt. Mross lebt und arbeitet überwiegend in Berlin und im Raum Hamburg.

David Millán gehört zu den interessantesten Schlagzeugern der derzeitigen Musikwelt. Das kolumbianische Ausnahmetalent studierte erst in Ecuador und dann für den Master am Jazz-Institut Berlin und bereichert nun schon seit einigen Jahren die europäische Szene. Bekannt ist er für seine Stilsicherheit in fast allen Bereichen der lateinamerikanischen Musik und seine Wandlungs- und Anpassungsfähigkeit. Er arbeitete mit vielen namhaften internationalen Künstlern zusammen und ist neben seiner Tätigkeit als freischaffender Künstler ebenfalls als Produzent, Tontechniker und Leiter seiner eigenen Online-Schlagzeugschule tätig.

Buena Vista Social Club – who hasn't heard of this illustrious name, one of the most successful Cuban music projects of all time? It wasn't just Wim Wenders' legendary documentary that brought the 1996 album, featuring a host of stars from the Cuban music scene, to international fame.

The music of the album will be celebrated by none other than singer Sergio Medina together with a top-class selection of musicians from the Berlin scene, bringing the spirit of the project to life. It couldn't be more authentic: Sergio Medina has worked with many of the musicians involved in the Buena Vista Social Club. He was born in Santiago de Cuba and has spent a large part of his life in Havana. As a singer, composer, and lyricist, he has worked in all areas of Cuban music with different bands and in various projects. In 1984, he started out as a sound engineer with “Conjunto Los Karachi,” during which time he wrote his first compositions, which were included in the repertoire. Since 1989, he has been active in numerous ensembles: Grupo Mackandal, Grupo Afrocaribe, Orquesta Los Filin, Orquesta Siglo XX, Orquesta Havana All Star, Orquesta Islacaribe, Orquesta Son Caturla, Havana Son Light, Amaranto Fernandez y su grupo. Sergio Medina has been living and working in Berlin since 2019.

Medina can be seen regularly at the Zig Zag Jazz Club with the salsa jazz fusion band “Havana Berlin Express,” whose double bassist and co-producer Urs Johnen will also be performing that evening. Johnen studied double bass in Stuttgart and Weimar and now lives in Berlin, the Black Forest, and Mallorca. He works with project orchestras and ensembles in the jazz and classical fields.

Felix Mross is a classically trained pianist with a wide stylistic range. He received several national awards at the “Jugend musiziert” competition as well as the WDR Classical Music Prize in 2004. As a soloist and accompanist, he has performed at prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York. In recent years, he has increasingly focused his artistic work on jazz and Latin American styles. Mross lives and works primarily in Berlin and the Hamburg area.

David Millán is one of the most interesting drummers in the current music world. The exceptionally talented Colombian first studied in Ecuador and then completed his master's degree at the Jazz Institute Berlin, and has been enriching the European scene for several years now. He is known for his stylistic confidence in almost all areas of Latin American music and his versatility and adaptability. He has worked with many renowned international artists and, in addition to his work as a freelance artist, is also a producer, sound engineer, and director of his own online drum school.
