Mit “A Tribute to Dizzy Gillespie” widmet sich eine Berliner Allstarband den Kompositionen und dem Oeuvre eines der beliebtesten und bedeutendsten Jazztrompeter und Urväter des Bebop. Es besteht aus einigen der talentiertesten und gefragtesten Musiker der heutigen Jazzszene. Das All-Star-Ensemble unter der Leitung des berüchtigten Berliner Jazz-Giganten Uri Gincel feiert die Spielfreude, den Witz und die Kompositionen des Bebop-Pioniers, der zusammen mit Charlie Parker und anderen den Jazz von der ersten Popularmusik zur ernstzunehmenden Kunstform entwickelte. Uri Gincel ist einer der gefragtesten und angesehensten Jazzpianisten in Berlin. Gincels Stil ist stark in der Tradition verwurzelt, aber er versteht es, den Jazz in die Moderne zu bringen. Sein Spiel ist dynamisch, lyrisch und vor allem voller Energie und Kraft! Der in Tel Aviv geborene Gincel kam 2009 nach Berlin und wurde schnell zu einem einflussreichen Teil der Jazzszene. Uri tourte mit vielen Projekten um die Welt, darunter das "Uri Gincel Trio" und "Bonaparte", und studierte bei bedeutenden Musikern wie Arnie Lawrence und Walter Blending Jr. Seit Jahren ist er aus der Berliner Szene nicht mehr wegzudenken und hat als Host der dienstäglichen Session im ZigZag eine wahre Institution im kulturellen Leben an der Spree geschaffen.

Der aus Südafrika stammende, in den USA lebende Trompeter Darren English gilt als einer der spannendsten Jazzmusiker seiner Generation. Für sein Debütalbum Imagine Nation erhielt er begeisterte Kritiken in den USA, Europa und Südafrika – inklusive einer Grammy-Nominierung auf der Longlist, einem SAMA-Nod (South African Music Awards) und der Auszeichnung „Best of the Year“ von JAZZIZ Magazine und der Huffington Post.

English ist mehrfacher Preisträger, u.a. der Global Peace Song Awards (2020 & 2018), des FMR Awards, sowie des SAMRO Overseas Award. Auftritte und Aufnahmen mit Künstlern wie Russell Gunn, Carmen Bradford, Kebbi Williams, Curtis Harding, Joe Gransden und Jimmy Heath unterstreichen seinen internationalen Ruf. Als Solist war er auf Alben von Russell Gunn, Dave Potter und Marcus Roberts zu hören. Sein Auftritt beim Cape Town International Jazz Festival zählte zu den Highlights des Events.

Tobias Backhaus wurde am 8. Januar 1984 in Darmstadt, Deutschland, geboren. Er begann im Alter von 5 Jahren mit dem Schlagzeugspiel und studierte anschließend bei Jazzmeistern wie Keith Copeland, Ari Hoenig, Jim Black, John Hollenbeck und Jeff Ballard. Er hat einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Jazz-Performance vom Jazz-Institut Berlin. Sein individueller Ansatz und seine stilistische Vielfalt - von traditionellem Jazz über freie Improvisation bis hin zu moderner klassischer Musik und darüber hinaus - sowie seine Fähigkeit, sich mühelos zwischen diesen verschiedenen Welten zu bewegen, haben ihn zu einem der gefragtesten jungen Schlagzeuger der deutschen Jazzszene gemacht. Tobias hat mit Künstlern wie Torsten de Winkel, Till Brönner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tony Lakatos, Carlos Bica, Jiggs Whigham, Gwilym Simcock, Peter Weniger, Frank Chastenier und Ack van Rooyen, den Dresdner Symphonikern, der NDR Big Band, dem Berlin Jazz Orchestra und vielen anderen zusammengearbeitet.

Uri Gincel is one of the most sought-after and respected jazz pianists in Berlin. Gincel's style is strongly rooted in tradition, but he knows how to bring jazz into the modern age. His playing is dynamic, lyrical and above all full of energy and power! Born in Tel Aviv, Gincel came to Berlin in 2009 and quickly became an influential part of the jazz scene. Uri toured the world with many projects, including the "Uri Gincel Trio" and "Bonaparte", and studied with eminent musicians such as Arnie Lawrence and Walter Blending Jr. For years it has been impossible to imagine the Berlin scene without him, and as host of the Tuesday session at ZigZag he has created a true institution in the cultural life of the Spree.

South African-born, US-based trumpeter Darren English is one of the most compelling young voices in contemporary jazz. His debut album Imagine Nation drew widespread critical acclaim in the U.S., Europe, and South Africa, landing on the Grammy® longlist and earning nominations from the South African Music Awards and praise from JAZZIZ Magazineand The Huffington Post as a Best of the Year. A two-time Global Peace Song Award winner (2020 & 2018), he also holds honors from FMR, SAMRO, and was named one of Atlanta’s 40 Under 40 most influential creatives. English has performed and recorded with Russell Gunn, Carmen Bradford, Kebbi Williams, Curtis Harding, Jimmy Heath, and Marcus Roberts, among others. He’s appeared at major festivals, including a main stage set at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, and has been featured on records by Russell Gunn and Dave Potter.

Tel Aviv born and Berlin based, Ori Jacobson has played alongside Esperanza Spalding (Four Grammy Awards winner), Terri Lyne Carrington (Two Grammy Awards winner), Susana Baca (Latin Grammy winner) and performed on world renown stages such as North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Beacon Theater and Agganis Arena to name a few. Ori is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Berklee College of Music for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Global Jazz Institute lead by Danilo Perez, awarded a full tuition scholarship for both degrees for outstanding jazz and saxophone performance. During his time in Berklee he studied closely with some of the most dominant saxophone voices of today's jazz scene: Joe Lovano, George Garzone and David Liebman. Ori is currently the saxophone player of the Doug Weiss Quartet and Louis Bonilla Quintet.

Paul Kleber was born in Berlin and started playing cello and drums at a young age, before he chose his main instrument, the double bass. He studied classical bass at the Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ Berlin and later jazz bass at the Universität der Künste Berlin. He played and recorded with Jazzanova, Sebastian Studnitzky, British band Fink, Micatone, Nylon, JazzIndeed and Lisa Bassenge.

Tobias Backhaus was born in Darmstadt, Germany, on January 8 1984. He took up the drums at the age of 5 and has subsequently been studying under the guideance of jazz masters such as Keith Copeland, Ari Hoenig, Jim Black, John Hollenbeck and Jeff Ballard. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in jazz performance from the Jazz-Institute Berlin. His individual approach and stylistic diversity – from traditional jazz to free improvisation, modern classical music and beyond – as well as his ability to effortlessly move between those different worlds have made him one of the most in-demand young drummers on the German jazz scene. Tobias has been working with artists such as Torsten de Winkel, Till Brönner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tony Lakatos, Carlos Bica, Jiggs Whigham, Gwilym Simcock, Peter Weniger, Frank Chastenier and Ack van Rooyen, the Dresden Symphonic Orchestra, the NDR Big Band, the Berlin Jazz Orchestra and many others.
