FOR FREE HANDS ist eines der Vorzeigeprojekte der multikulturellen Jazzszene Berlins. Die Preisträger des Studiopreises Jazz vereinen moderne Jazz-Arrangements mit den Rhythmen des Balkans. In der aktuellen Besetzung spielen der Echopreisträger Diego Piñera (UY) am Schlagzeug, Vladimir Karparov (BG) Saxophone,, Andreas Brunn (D) E-Gitarren und Niklas Lukassen (D) E-Bass. Und nicht nur das: FOR FREE HANDS wurden für das Festival Jazz au Chellah in Marokko gebucht, verbunden mit der Bitte ein Projekt mit dem marokkanischen Oudvirtuosen Alaa Zouiten zu realisieren. Befeuert durch diese überaus erfolgreiche Zusammenarbewit nahmen FOR FREE HANDS ein Album mit Alaa auf, dass in diesem Jahr auf Laika Records veröffentlicht wird.

Alaa Zouiten, geboren in Casablanca ist ein in Berlin lebender Oudvirtuose. In seiner Geburtsstadt begann seine musikalische Karriere an der Oud, der arabischen Laute, und führte von der Ausbildung am Conservatoire National de Marrakech hin zum Sideman der Fusion- Band „Jbara“. Parallel setzte er seine musikalischen Studien fort und schloss 2013 ein Bachelor-Studium in Musikvermittlung und Philosophie an der Universität Erfurt ab. Daran schloss sich ein Masterstudium in Transcultural Music Studies an der Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar an. Er veröffentlichte mehrere Alben als Leader. Weitere wichtige Stationen von Alaa waren die musikalische Leitung und der Auftritt mit dem "Global Arabian Music Orchestra" in der Berliner Philharmonie, der Auftritt bei dem "Requiem für Syrien" in der Dresdner Philharmonie, Bienal del Flamenco in Sevilla (sept 2020), die Tourneen von "TALKING OUD 2020/2021" in Frankreich, Deutschland, Spanien und Marokko sowie die UK-Tour mit "Making Tracks 2022". Im ZigZag leitet er die regelmäßig stattfindende und oft ausverkaufte “Arab Song”-Reihe.

Die so eigenständige wie expressive Musik von Vladimir Karparov zeichnet sich aus durch eine perfekte Fusion von zeitgenössischem Jazz und der rhythmischen und melodischen Farbigkeit der vitalen Volksmusik Bulgariens. Der vielseitig inspirierte Musiker und talentierte Komponist, der Genregrenzen mit Leichtigkeit überspringt, veröffentlichte sehr erfolgreiche eigene Alben wie „Thracian Dance“ (2007), Forkolor (2014), Antihypocrisyl (2016), Iglika (2022). Im Jahr 2020 erhielt er die Auszeichnung des bulgarischen Kulturministeriums für die weltweite Popularisierung der bulgarischen Kultur. Neben der Tätigkeit in eigenen Formationen wie dem V. Karparov Quartett, dem Balkan Spirit Ensemble, dem Forkolor Saxophon Quartet sowie dem Duo Stawinski & Karparov und der Karparty Brass Band, tritt er aktiv als Gastmusiker mit verschiedenen Formationen auf.

Andreas Brunn gewann beim Gitarrenkompositionswettbewerb Open Strings des Fachmagazins Akustik Gitarre mit seiner Komposition Two Faces den 1. Preis. Er leitet das Quartett For Free Hands, komponiert die Musik und veröffentlichte 4 CDs mit dem Ensemble. Weiterhin veröffentlichte er CDs mit den Duos Karparov & Brunn, Hartmann & Brunn, dem Ensemble der „Jungen Musik Karawane“ und dem Trio BalkaNova. Seine letzte CD erschien 2021: A.Brunn - V.Karparov - S.Rainer … New Urban World Melodic Grooves. Seit Mitte der Neunziger baut er Brücken nach Osten, kreuzt bulgarische Metren mit Jazz, bringt Kindern Rhythmus als soziales Bindemittel bei, erwandert sich klug das Terrain zwischen Jazz und „Weltmusik“.

Diego Pinera, preisgekrönter Jazzvirtuose, ist eine einzigartige Persönlichkeit, die der Musik wirklich neue Wege weist, indem er die poetisch-rhythmische Freiheit des Jazz anderen metrischen Systemen gegenüberstellt. Seit 2002 wurde Diego Piñera sowohl als Drummer „Instrumentalist“ als auch als Songwriter international wie national mehrfach ausgezeichnet, zuletzt mit dem ECHO JAZZ 2017. Das bei ACT Records erschienene Album Odd Wisdom kam in die Grammy-Vorauswahl. Er gilt als Ausnahmekünstler seines Faches. Sein charakterstarker persönlicher Stil ist geprägt durch ein avanciert rhythmisches Spielkonzept, ein Jazz-Sound mit Latin-Touch sowie dem Freiheitdrang der Improvisation. Musikalische Komplexität sowie Virtuosität bleiben bei Pinera aber stets subtil, eine besondere Frische und Leichtigkeit durchströmt sein künstlerisches Schaffen.

Der in New York und Berlin lebende Bassist, Komponist und Sänger Niklas Lukassen präsentiert sich als aufsteigender Tausendsassa mit einer besonderen künstlerischen Handschrift. 2017 zog er nach New York, wo er an der Manhattan School of Music sein Masterstudium mit vollem Stipendium abschloss und in seinem Vorbild Maestro Ron Carter einen langjährigen Mentor fand. Dort hat er mit renommierten Künstlern wie zum Beispiel Mike Stern, Joe Lovano, Oz Noy und Sean Wayland zusammengearbeitet.

FOR FREE HANDS is one of the flagship projects of Berlin's multicultural jazz scene. The winners of the Studiopreis Jazz combine modern jazz arrangements with the rhythms of the Balkans. The current line-up features Echo Award winner Diego Piñera (UY) on drums, Vladimir Karparov (BG) saxophones,, Andreas Brunn (D) electric guitars and Niklas Lukassen (D) electric bass. And not only that: FOR FREE HANDS were booked for the festival Jazz au Chellah in Morocco, combined with the request to realize a project with the Moroccan oud virtuoso Alaa Zouiten. Fueled by this highly successful collaboration, FOR FREE HANDS recorded an album with Alaa that will be released this year on Laika Records.

Alaa Zouiten, born in Casablanca, is an oud virtuoso living in Berlin. His musical career began in his native city on the oud, the Arabic lute, and led from training at the Conservatoire National de Marrakech to becoming a sideman of the fusion band "Jbara". In parallel, he continued his musical studies and completed a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and Philosophy at the University of Erfurt in 2013. This was followed by a master's degree in Transcultural Music Studies at the Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar. He released several albums as a leader. Vladimir Karparov's music, as independent as it is expressive, is characterized by a perfect fusion of contemporary jazz and the rhythmic and melodic colorfulness of Bulgaria's vital folk music. The versatile inspired musician and talented composer, who crosses genre boundaries with ease, released very successful albums of his own such as "Thracian Dance" (2007), Forkolor (2014), Antihypocrisyl (2016), Iglika (2022). In 2020 he received the award of the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture for popularizing Bulgarian culture worldwide. In addition to performing in his own formations such as the V. Karparov Quartet, the Balkan Spirit Ensemble, the Forkolor Saxophone Quartet as well as the Duo Stawinski & Karparov and the Karparty Brass Band, he actively performs as a guest musician with various formations.

Andreas Brunn won 1st prize at the guitar composition competition Open Strings of the trade magazine Akustik Gitarre with his composition Two Faces. He leads the quartet For Free Hands, composes the music and released 4 CDs with the ensemble. He also released CDs with the duos Karparov & Brunn, Hartmann & Brunn, the ensemble of the "Young Music Caravan" and the trio BalkaNova. His last CD was released in 2021: A.Brunn - V.Karparov - S.Rainer ... New Urban World Melodic Grooves. Since the mid-nineties he has been building bridges to the East, crossing Bulgarian meters with jazz, teaching children rhythm as a social bonding agent, wisely wandering the terrain between jazz and "world music".

Diego Pinera, award-winning jazz virtuoso, is a unique personality who truly breaks new ground for music by juxtaposing the poetic-rhythmic freedom of jazz with other metric systems. Since 2002, Diego Piñera has received numerous awards both internationally and nationally as a drummer "instrumentalist" and songwriter, most recently the ECHO JAZZ 2017, and the album Odd Wisdom, released on ACT Records, was a Grammy pre-selection. He is considered an exceptional artist in his field. His strong character personal style is characterized by an advanced rhythmic playing concept, a jazz sound with a Latin touch as well as the freedom urge of improvisation. Musical complexity as well as virtuosity always remain subtle with Pinera, a special freshness and lightness flows through his artistic work.

The bassist, composer and singer Niklas Lukassen, who lives in New York and Berlin, presents himself as a rising jack-of-all-trades with a special artistic signature. In 2017, he moved to New York, where he completed his master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music on full scholarship and found a longtime mentor in his idol Maestro Ron Carter. There he has collaborated with renowned artists such as Mike Stern, Joe Lovano, Oz Noy and Sean Wayland, for example.
