FOR FREE HANDS ist eines der Vorzeigeprojekte der multikulturellen Jazzszene Berlins. Die Preisträger des Studiopreises Jazz vereinen moderne Jazz-Arrangements und jazzrockige Sounds mit Rhythmik und Klang des Balkans und nahen Ostens. Am 26.06. feiern For Free Hands im ZigZag-Jazzclub ihr 30jähriges Jubiläum! Mit dabei ist der Oudvirtouse Alaa Zouiten, der die Band schon bei etlichen Konzerten live begleitete. Seien Sie dabei, gemeinsam mit For Free Hands und dem ZigZag-Team dieses Ausnahmeprojekt gebührend zu feiern!

Alaa Zouiten, geboren in Casablanca. Dort begann seine musikalische Karriere zum Meister an der Oud, der arabischen Laute, und führte von der Ausbildung am Conservatoire National de Marrakech hin zum Sideman der Fusion- Band „Jbara“. Parallel setzte er seine musikalischen Studien fort und schloss 2013 ein Bachelor-Studium in Musikvermittlung und Philosophie an der Universität Erfurt ab. Daran schloss sich ein Masterstudium in Transcultural Music Studies an der Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar an. Er veröffentlichte mehrere Alben als Leader.
Weitere wichtige Stationen von Alaa Zouiten waren die musikalische Leitung und der Auftritt mit dem "Global Arabian Music Orchestra" in der Berliner Philharmonie, der Auftritt bei dem "Requiem für Syrien" in der Dresdner Philharmonie, Bienal del Flamenco in Sevilla (sept 2020), die Tourneen von "TALKING OUD 2020/2021" in Frankreich, Deutschland, Spanien und Marokko sowie die UK-Tour mit "Making Tracks 2022".

Die so eigenständige wie expressive Musik von Vladimir Karparov zeichnet sich aus durch eine perfekte Fusion von zeitgenössischem Jazz und der rhythmischen und melodischen Farbigkeit der vitalen Volksmusik Bulgariens. Der vielseitig inspirierte Musiker und talentierte Komponist, der Genregrenzen mit Leichtigkeit überspringt, veröffentlichte sehr erfolgreiche eigene Alben wie „Thracian Dance“ (2007), Forkolor (2014), Antihypocrisyl (2016), Iglika (2022). Im Jahr 2020 erhielt er die Auszeichnung des bulgarischen Kulturministeriums für die weltweite Popularisierung der bulgarischen Kultur. Neben der Tätigkeit in eigenen Formationen wie dem V. Karparov Quartett, dem Balkan Spirit Ensemble, dem Forkolor Saxophon Quartet sowie dem Duo Stawinski & Karparov und der Karparty Brass Band, tritt er aktiv als Gastmusiker mit verschiedenen Formationen auf.

Andreas Brunn gewann beim Gitarrenkompositionswettbewerb Open Strings des Fachmagazins Akustik Gitarre mit seiner Komposition Two Faces den 1. Preis. Er leitet das Quartett For Free Hands, komponiert die Musik und veröffentlichte 4 CDs mit dem Ensemble. Weiterhin veröffentlichte er CDs mit den Duos Karparov & Brunn, Hartmann & Brunn, dem Ensemble der „Jungen Musik Karawane“ und dem Trio BalkaNova. Seine letzte CD erschien 2021: A.Brunn - V.Karparov - S.Rainer … New Urban World Melodic Grooves. Seit Mitte der Neunziger baut er Brücken nach Osten, kreuzt bulgarische Metren mit Jazz, bringt Kindern Rhythmus als soziales Bindemittel bei, erwandert sich klug das Terrain zwischen Jazz und „Weltmusik“.

Roberto Badoglio wurde 1984 geboren und begann nach einem Klavierstudium für einige Jahre Bass zu spielen. Mit 16 Jahren nahm er Privatunterricht in Frankreich bei Dominique Di Piazza und in New York bei Matthew Garrison und Skuli Sverrisson. 2005/06 besuchte er das Berklee College of Music in Boston, wo er auch Gelegenheit hatte, privat mit dem Posaunisten Hal Crook zu studieren und mit der renommierten Pianistin Joanne Brackeen in ihrem Ensemble zu spielen. Nach Berklee zog er nach NY City, schloss sich der Band der Popsängerin Adama an und spielte weiterhin in der Stadt und auf internationalen Tourneen mit vielen großen Musikern der New Yorker Szene, wie Louis Cato, Marko Djordjevic, Brad und Eliot Mason, Hara Garacci und viele andere. Roberto lebt derzeit in Berlin.

FOR FREE HANDS is one of the flagship projects of Berlin’s multicultural jazz scene. Winners of the Jazz Studio Prize, the band merges modern jazz arrangements and jazz-rock sounds with the rhythms and timbres of the Balkans and the Middle East. On June 26th, For Free Hands will celebrate their 30th anniversary at the ZigZag Jazz Club! Joining them is oud virtuoso Alaa Zouiten, who has accompanied the band live on numerous occasions. Alaa Zouiten, born in Casablanca. Vladimir Karparov's music, as independent as it is expressive, is characterized by a perfect fusion of contemporary jazz and the rhythmic and melodic colorfulness of Bulgaria's vital folk music. The versatile inspired musician and talented composer, who crosses genre boundaries with ease, released very successful albums of his own such as "Thracian Dance" (2007), Forkolor (2014), Antihypocrisyl (2016), Iglika (2022). In 2020 he received the award of the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture for popularizing Bulgarian culture worldwide. In addition to performing in his own formations such as the V. Karparov Quartet, the Balkan Spirit Ensemble, the Forkolor Saxophone Quartet as well as the Duo Stawinski & Karparov and the Karparty Brass Band, he actively performs as a guest musician with various formations.

Andreas Brunn won 1st prize at the guitar composition competition Open Strings of the trade magazine Akustik Gitarre with his composition Two Faces. He leads the quartet For Free Hands, composes the music and released 4 CDs with the ensemble. He also released CDs with the duos Karparov & Brunn, Hartmann & Brunn, the ensemble of the "Young Music Caravan" and the trio BalkaNova. His last CD was released in 2021: A.Brunn - V.Karparov - S.Rainer ... New Urban World Melodic Grooves. Since the mid-nineties he has been building bridges to the East, crossing Bulgarian meters with jazz, teaching children rhythm as a social bonding agent, wisely wandering the terrain between jazz and "world music".

Roberto Badoglio was born in 1984 and began playing bass for a few years after studying piano. At the age of 16, he took private lessons in France with Dominique Di Piazza and in New York with Matthew Garrison and Skuli Sverrisson. In 2005/06 he attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he also had the opportunity to study privately with trombonist Hal Crook and play with renowned pianist Joanne Brackeen in her ensemble. After Berklee, he moved to NY City, joined pop singer Adama's band and continued to play in the city and on international tours with many great musicians of the New York scene, such as Louis Cato, Marko Djordjevic, Brad and Eliot Mason, Hara Garacci and many others. Roberto currently lives in Berlin.
