Berlin ist eine DER Jazzmetropolen weltweit, und die Jazzszene so international und heterogen, wie es nur geht. Die Vielfalt und Unterschiedlichkeit der Akteur*innen machen jedes Konzert zu einem einzigartigen Erlebnis. Egal, ob eher traditionsorientiert oder modern: im Jazz begegnen sich alle auf Augenhöhe und finden in der Improvisation zueinander. Besonders intensiv werden diese Begegnungen in unserer neuen Reihe Jazz Encounters erlebbar!

Jazz Encounters goes international: Die argentinische Sängerin Nayla Yenquis trifft auf den Kubaner Sergio Medina Cabellero, und mit ihnen begegnen sich Musiker*innen aus Venezuela, Spanien, Frankreich, Russland, Australien und Montenegro auf der Bühne des Zig Zag Jazz Club. Der Abend verspricht ein vorweihnachtliches Fest der Sinne zu werden und setzt der winterlichen Kälte jede Menge südländisches Feuer entgegen. Von den weltbekannten Klassikern des Buena Vista Social Clubs aus Havana bis zu den Evergreens der Copa Cobana in Rio de Janeiro wird ein Bogen über die lateinamerikanische Musiktradition gespannt – gepaart mit Improvisationskunst der Extraklasse.

Nayla Yenquis ist in Mar del Plata, Argentinien, geboren und aufgewachsen. Mit 18 Jahren schloss sie ihre erste Ausbilung am Conservatorio Superior de Musica ab. Nayla interessierte sich jedoch nicht nur für klassische Musik und beschloss moderne Musik und Jazz am "Centro Polivalente de Arte" zu studieren. Seit 2005 lebt sie auf Mallorca und hat in der europäischen Szene Fuß gefasst. Seit 2013 spielt sie mit der Nayla Yenquis Group, mit der sie in renommierten Konzertsälen und auf Festivals in ganz Europa auftritt, darunter dem Pizza Express London, dem London Jazz Festival, dem Blue Note, dem Birdland und anderen.

Sergio Medina ist in Santiago de Cuba geboren und verbrachte einen großen Teil seines bisherigen Lebens in Habana. Als Sänger, Komponist und Texter arbeitete er in allen Bereichen der kubanischen Musik mit unterschiedlichen Bands und in verschiedenen Projekten. 1984 begann er zunächst als Tontechniker bei “Conjunto Los Karachi”, in dieser Zeit entstanden erste eigene Kompositionen, die ins Repertoire aufgenommen wurden. Seit 1989 war er in zahlreichen Ensembles aktiv: Grupo Mackandal, Grupo Afrocaribe, Orquesta Los Filin, Orquesta Siglo XX, Orquesta Havana All Star, Orquesta Islacaribe, Orquesta Son Caturla, Havana Son Light, Amaranto Fernandez y su grupo. Seit 2019 lebt und arbeitet Sergio Medina in Berlin.

Greg Ambroisine ist ein in Deutschland ansässiger Trompeter, Regisseur, Pädagoge und Komponist, der weltweit mit seiner Musik aufgetreten ist. Ambroisine wurde in Sydney geboren und zog nach Beginn seines Musikstudiums nach Melbourne um. Nach seinem Abschluss am Victorian College of the Arts reiste Ambroisine als professioneller Jazzmusiker durch Kanada und Deutschland. Während dieser Zeit trat er mit dem Trompeter Maarcus Belgrave (Ray Charles, Charles Mingus, Motown Records, Tribe Records, Blue Note Records) und dem legendären Schlagzeuger Richard "Pistol" Allen auf.

Ben Kraef ist ein deutsch-montenegrinischer Saxophonist und Komponist, der in Berlin lebt. Ben schloss sein Studium an der Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin ab und erwarb 2009 einen Master of Arts am City College of New York, wo er 2008 mit dem Billie-Stoller-Stipendium für einen herausragenden Wissenschaftler und Musiker ausgezeichnet wurde. Die Liste der international renommierten Musiker mit denen Ben auftrat und aufnahm, umfasst Koryphäen wie Lalo Schifrin, Fred Hersch, Pee Wee Ellis und Till Brönner sowie Popgruppen wie "Wir Sind Helden" und die Radio-Bigbands von HR und WDR.

Pierre Bauzerand, geboren 1985, begann im Alter von 8 Jahren mit dem Klavierspiel. Im Alter von 17 Jahren machte Pierre seinen Abschluss am Jazz-Konservatorium von Toulouse. Pierre hat an verschiedenen Meisterkursen und Jam-Sessions mit einer Reihe berühmter Musiker wie Wynton Marsalis, Oscar Peterson, Monty Alexander, Molly Duncan, James Cammack, Roy Hargrove und vielen anderen teilgenommen. Nach fast 10 Jahren Erfahrung mit Jazzbands und improvisierter Musik in Toulouse begann Pierre die Welt zu bereisen (Brasilien, Malaysia, Neuseeland, Australien, New York, London, Kap Verde), wo er sich verschiedensten Musikkulturen inspirieren ließ. Er spielt in einer großen Anzahl fester Bands und durfte mehrere internationale Festivals wie das Jazz in Marciac, das Palma Jazz Festival und das London Jazz Festival bespielen.

Cesar Capote wurde Venezuela geboren. Im Alter von 12 Jahren begann er sich erstmals für folkloristische venezolanische Musik zu interessieren. 4 Jahre später entdeckt er den E-Bass für sich. Mit 18 Jahren zog dann er nach Argentinien, um seine musikalische Ausbildung in professionelle Bahnen zu lenken. 2008 zog er nach Madrid, wo er durch ein Stipendium die Möglichkeit hatte zusätzlich noch Kontrabass und Arrangement zu studieren. Er spezialisierte sich auf Lateinamerikanische Musik und ist im spanischsprachigen Raum ein vielgefragter und populärer Musiker. Inzwischen ist er auf Mallorca beheimatet und arbeitet von dort aus als Bassist, Tontechniker, Arrangeur und Bandleader.

Urs Johnen wurde in Tübingen geboren, ist im Schwarzwald aufgewachsen und ist heute in Berlin und auf Mallorca zuhause. Er studierte Kontrabass in Stuttgart und in Weimar, erhielt Unterricht u.a. bei Horst-Dieter Wenkel, Ulrich Lau, Manfred Bründl, Frank Möbus, Jo Thönes, Klaus Dusek sowie Patrick Bopp und war Stipendiat der Thüringer Orchesterakademie als Kontrabassist bei den Jenaer Philharmonikern. Frühe Erfahrungen in Klassikensembles wie der Jeunesse Musicale Franco-Allemande, der Jungen Deutschen Philharmonie oder der Philharmonie der Nationen einerseits und Jazzensembles wie dem Landesjugendjazzorchester Baden-Württemberg andererseits prägten sein Selbstverständnis als musikalischer Brückenbauer und Grenzgänger. Er ist im Jazz-, Pop- und Klassikbereich aktiv und konzertierte mit Formationen von der Alten bis zur Zeitgenössischen Musik sowie vom Singer-Songwriter-Pop bis zum Avantgardejazz im In- und Ausland.

Anna Gelyuk ist eine überaus aufregende junge Schlagzeugerin, die in Berlin lebt. Die studierte Philosophin, die sich erst in Moskau und nun in Berlin dem Jazz widmet ist eine einfühlsame Begleiterin wie talentierte Improvisatorin. In ihrer noch jungen Karriere nahm sie schon mit Erfolg an zahlreichen internationalen Wettbewerben teil und ist bereits lange Jahre als Schlagzeuglehrerin tätig. In Berlin studiert sie derzeit Komposition im Master-Studiengang.

Pep Lluís García begann im Alter von 17 Jahren Schlagzeug zu spielen und spielte erspielte sich schnell einen guten Ruf in der Musikszene von Palma. Er hatte Unterricht bei Peter Erskine, Alex Acuña und anderen Schlagzeugern. Im Jazz wie auch besonders in der Latin-Musik zuhause, ist García in ganz Europa gefragt und geschätzt.

Through powerful groove, melodic virtuosity, and dynamic interaction Jazz is a truly multicultural art form that celebrates the spontaneous gatherings of musicians. These encounters can be experienced intensively in our new series Jazz Encounters, an evening where some of the best Jazz musicians from around the globe meet at the Zig Zag Jazz Club for an exciting evening where we celebrate the magic of JAZZ!

Tonight Jazz Encounters goes international: Argentinian singer Nayla Yenquis meets Cuban Sergio Medina Cabellero, and they are joined on stage at the Zig Zag Jazz Club by musicians from Venezuela, Spain, France, Russia, Australia and Montenegro. The evening promises to be a pre-Christmas feast for the senses and will counter the winter chill with plenty of southern fire. From the world-famous classics of the Buena Vista Social Club from Havana to the evergreens of the Copa Cobana in Rio de Janeiro, an arc will be drawn across the Latin American musical tradition - paired with top-class improvisation.

Nayla Yenquis was born and grew up in Mar del Plata, Argentina. She completed her first training at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica at the age of 18. However, Nayla was not only interested in classical music and decided to study modern music and jazz at the "Centro Polivalente de Arte". She has lived in Mallorca since 2005 and has gained a foothold in the European scene. Since 2013 she has been playing with the Nayla Yenquis Group, with whom she performs in prestigious concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, including Pizza Express London, the London Jazz Festival, the Blue Note, Birdland and others.

Greg Ambroisine is a German-based trumpeter, director, educator and composer who has performed his music worldwide. Ambroisine was born in Sydney and moved to Melbourne after beginning his music studies. After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts, Ambroisine traveled throughout Canada and Germany as a professional jazz musician. During this time he performed with trumpeter Maarcus Belgrave (Ray Charles, Charles Mingus, Motown Records, Tribe Records, Blue Note Records) and legendary drummer Richard "Pistol" Allen.

Ben Kraef is a German-Montenegrin saxophonist and composer based in Berlin. Ben graduated from the University of Music “Hanns Eisler”, Berlin and obtained a Master of Arts from The City College of New York in 2009 where he was also awarded the Billie Stoller Scholarship to an outstanding scholar and musician in 2008. The list of internationally renowned musicians Ben has been performing and recording with includes luminaries Lalo Schifrin, Fred Hersch, Pee Wee Ellis and Till Brönner as well as pop groups such as „Wir Sind Helden” and the radio big bands of HR and WDR.

Pierre Bauzerand, born in 1985, started playing the piano at the age of 8. At the age of 17, Pierre graduated from the Toulouse Jazz Conservatory. Pierre has participated in various master classes and jam sessions with a number of famous musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Oscar Peterson, Monty Alexander, Molly Duncan, James Cammack, Roy Hargrove and many others. After almost 10 years of experience with jazz bands and improvised music in Toulouse, Pierre began to travel the world (Brazil, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, New York, London, Cape Verde), where he was inspired by a wide variety of musical cultures. He plays in a large number of permanent bands and has played at several international festivals such as Jazz in Marciac, the Palma Jazz Festival and the London Jazz Festival.

Cesar Capote was born in Venezuela. He first became interested in Venezuelan folkloric music at the age of 12. He discovered the electric bass 4 years later. At the age of 18, he moved to Argentina to pursue his musical education professionally. In 2008 he moved to Madrid, where a scholarship gave him the opportunity to study double bass and arranging. He specialized in Latin American music and is a much sought-after and popular musician in Spanish-speaking countries. He now lives in Mallorca and works from there as a bassist, sound engineer, arranger and bandleader.

Urs Johnen was born in Tübingen in 1982, grew up in Calw in the Black Forest and now also lives in Berlin and in Andratx, Mallorca. He studied double bass in Stuttgart and in Weimar, received lessons from Horst-Dieter Wenkel, Ulrich Lau, Manfred Bründl, Frank Möbus, Jo Thönes, Klaus Dusek as well as Patrick Bopp and was a scholarship holder of the Thuringian Orchestra Academy as a double bass player with the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra. Early experiences in classical ensembles such as the Jeunesse Musicale Franco-Allemande, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie or the Philharmonie der Nationen on the one hand and jazz ensembles such as the Landesjugendjazzorchester Baden-Württemberg on the other hand shaped his self-image as a musical bridge builder and border crosser. He is active in jazz, pop and classical music and has performed with formations ranging from early to contemporary music as well as from singer-songwriter pop to avant-garde jazz in Germany and abroad.

Anna Gelyuk is an extremely exciting young drummer who lives in Berlin. The graduate philosopher, who dedicated herself to jazz first in Moscow and now in Berlin, is a sensitive accompanist and talented improviser. In her still young career, she has already successfully taken part in numerous international competitions and has been working as a percussion teacher for many years. She is currently studying for a master's degree in composition in Berlin.

Pep Lluís García started playing drums at the age of 17 and quickly gained a good reputation in the Palma music scene. He had lessons with Peter Erskine, Alex Acuña and other drummers. At home in jazz and especially in Latin music, García is in demand and appreciated throughout Europe.
