Mit „Celebrate Weather Report“ widmen sich Kurt Elling und die Yellowjackets dem Werk einer der einflussreichsten Bands der Jazzgeschichte. Die legendäre Formation um Joe Zawinul und Wayne Shorter prägte den elektrischen Jazz der 1970er- und 80er-Jahre entscheidend und wurde mit Musikern wie Jaco Pastorius zum Inbegriff einer neuen Verbindung von Jazz, Rock, Funk und elektronischen Klängen.
Dabei geht es ausdrücklich nicht um eine möglichst originalgetreue Rekonstruktion. Die Yellowjackets bringen selbst mehr als vier Jahrzehnte eigener Fusiongeschichte mit, während Elling der ursprünglich weitgehend instrumentalen Musik mit eigenen Texten und seiner Improvisationskunst eine neue Ebene hinzufügt. Gemeinsam nehmen sie sich Klassiker aus dem Repertoire von Weather Report vor und führen deren Musik aus ihrer eigenen Perspektive weiter. Zwei Generationen der Fusiongeschichte treffen auf einen der bedeutendsten Jazzsänger der Gegenwart!
Kurt Elling gehört seit drei Jahrzehnten zu den bedeutendsten Jazzsängern seiner Generation. Seit seinem Debüt „Close Your Eyes“ von 1995 erhielt er zahlreiche Grammy-Nominierungen und gewann den Preis zweimal, für „Dedicated to You“ und „Secrets Are the Best Stories“. Elling arbeitete unter anderem mit Branford Marsalis, Charlie Hunter, Danilo Pérez, Stefon Harris und Fred Hersch und verbindet die Tradition des Vocalese mit Improvisation, Spoken Word und eigenen Texten. Im Zig Zag war er bereits mit seinem Projekt SuperBlue feat. Charlie Hunter zu Gast.
Die Yellowjackets gehören seit mehr als vier Jahrzehnten zu den konstantesten Formationen des amerikanischen Fusion-Jazz. Aus einer Band um den Gitarristen Robben Ford hervorgegangen, veröffentlichten sie 1981 ihr erstes Album unter eigenem Namen. Es folgten mehr als zwei Dutzend Alben, zahlreiche Grammy-Nominierungen und zwei Grammy Awards. Ihre Geschichte reicht damit selbst bis in jene Epoche zurück, die von Bands wie Weather Report entscheidend geprägt wurde.
Russell Ferrante ist Gründungsmitglied und seit 1981 Pianist und Keyboarder der Yellowjackets. Neben seiner Arbeit mit der Band spielte und arbeitete er unter anderem mit Joni Mitchell, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Lee Ritenour und Robben Ford. Als Komponist ist Ferrante für einen wesentlichen Teil des Repertoires der Yellowjackets verantwortlich.
Bob Mintzer gehört seit 1991 zu den Yellowjackets. Der Saxophonist, Komponist und Arrangeur arbeitete unter anderem mit Buddy Rich, Jaco Pastorius, Tito Puente, Randy Brecker und Peter Erskine und leitete über viele Jahre seine eigene Big Band. Für das Album „Homage to Count Basie“ erhielt die Bob Mintzer Big Band 2001 einen Grammy. Neben seiner Arbeit als Musiker ist Mintzer Chefdirigent der WDR Big Band.
Der australische Bassist Dane Alderson stieß 2015 zu den Yellowjackets. Zuvor machte er insbesondere durch seine Arbeit mit dem australischen Fusion-Trio The Cat Empire sowie in unterschiedlichen Jazz- und Fusionprojekten auf sich aufmerksam. Bei den Yellowjackets übernahm er die Position des langjährigen Bassisten Felix Pastorius.
Will Kennedy wurde erstmals 1987 Mitglied der Yellowjackets und prägte den Sound der Band bis 1999 entscheidend mit. Nach einer längeren Pause kehrte er 2010 zurück. Darüber hinaus arbeitete der Schlagzeuger unter anderem mit Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Lee Ritenour, George Benson und Dianne Reeves. Mit seiner Verbindung aus Jazz, Funk und R&B gehört Kennedy zu den zentralen Stimmen im charakteristischen Rhythmuskonzept der Yellowjackets.

With “Celebrate Weather Report”, the two-time Grammy winner and one of the longest-running fusion bands in jazz history turn their attention to the music of Weather Report, the legendary group led by Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter that played a defining role in shaping electric jazz throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
This is by no means an attempt at historical reconstruction. The Yellowjackets bring more than four decades of fusion history of their own, while Elling adds an entirely new dimension to Weather Report’s largely instrumental music through original lyrics and his extraordinary skills as an improviser. Together, they revisit classics from the Weather Report repertoire and take the music forward from their own perspective. Two generations of fusion history meet one of today’s most important jazz vocalists – together on our stage for the first time!

The Yellowjackets have been one of the most enduring groups in American jazz fusion for more than four decades. Emerging from a band originally formed around guitarist Robben Ford, they released their first album under the Yellowjackets name in 1981. More than two dozen albums, numerous Grammy nominations and two Grammy Awards have followed. Their own history therefore reaches back into the very era that bands such as Weather Report helped to define.
Russell Ferrante is a founding member and has been the pianist and keyboardist of the Yellowjackets since 1981. Beyond his work with the band, he has performed and collaborated with artists including Joni Mitchell, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Lee Ritenour and Robben Ford. As a composer, Ferrante has been responsible for a substantial part of the Yellowjackets’ repertoire.
Bob Mintzer joined the Yellowjackets in 1991. The saxophonist, composer and arranger has worked with artists including Buddy Rich, Jaco Pastorius, Tito Puente, Randy Brecker and Peter Erskine, while also leading his own big band for many years. The Bob Mintzer Big Band won a Grammy in 2001 for “Homage to Count Basie”. In addition to his work as a performer, Mintzer serves as chief conductor of the WDR Big Band.
Australian bassist Dane Alderson joined the Yellowjackets in 2015. Before joining the band, he established himself through his work in the Australian music scene and a wide range of jazz and fusion projects. With the Yellowjackets, he succeeded longtime bassist Felix Pastorius.
Will Kennedy first joined the Yellowjackets in 1987 and played a major role in shaping the band’s sound until 1999. After an extended absence, he returned in 2010. The drummer has also worked with artists including Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Lee Ritenour, George Benson and Dianne Reeves. His combination of jazz, funk and R&B has made Kennedy one of the central voices in the Yellowjackets’ distinctive rhythmic approach.
