Nduduzo Makhathini wuchs in der üppigen und zerklüfteten Hügellandschaft von umGungundlovu in Südafrika auf, einer stadtnahen Landschaft, in der Musik und rituelle Praktiken symbiotisch miteinander verbunden waren. Makhathini greift auf die Geschichte der südafrikanischen Jazzlegenden Bheki Mseleku, Moses Molelekwa und Abdullah Ibrahim zurück und verbindet Einflüsse aus dem großen amerikanischen Jazzkanon wie John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner und Randy Weston zu einem kontinentübergreifenden, vielschichtigen melodischen Groove. Er spielte unter anderem mit Wynton Marsalis, Richard Bona und der WDR Bigband. 2017 wurde der Blue-Note-Artist mit dem All Africa Music Award als bester afrikanischer Jazzmusiker ausgezeichnet. Seine zehn bisher veröffentlichten Alben, sowie sein aktuelles Album uNomkhubulwane (2024) sprechen eine universelle Sprache, die tief in afrikanischen Wurzeln der Jazz-Tradition wurzelt.

Nduduzo Makhathini grew up in the lush, rugged hills of umGungundlovu in South Africa, a semi-rural landscape where music and ritual practices were symbiotically intertwined. Drawing on the legacy of South African jazz legends like Bheki Mseleku, Moses Molelekwa, and Abdullah Ibrahim, Makhathini merges influences from the great American jazz canon—such as John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, and Randy Weston—into a cross-continental, richly layered melodic groove. He has performed with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Richard Bona, and the WDR Big Band. In 2017, the Blue Note artist was awarded the All Africa Music Award for Best African Jazz Artist. His ten albums to date, along with his latest release uNomkhubulwane (2024), speak a universal language deeply rooted in the African origins of the jazz tradition.
