Die Band Ragawerk um Gitarrist Max Clouth und Schlagzeuger Martin Standke verbindet analoge Wärme mit elektronischer Raffinesse, hypnotische Loops mit improvisatorischer Freiheit. Ihr Sound ist kosmopolitisch und doch geerdet: Jazz, Krautrock und indische Tradition verschmelzen zu einer eigenständigen musikalischen Vision. Ragawerk ist kein Crossover – es ist ein kreatives Labor, in dem östliche Tiefe auf westliche Präzision trifft. Mal meditativ, mal energetisch – aber immer klar, intensiv und überraschend.

Mit Niḷa legen Ragawerk ihr zweites Album vor – und erweitern ihr Klangspektrum um neue, überraschende Facetten. Rauer, unmittelbarer, kantiger als zuvor – mit mehr „Deutschness“ und zugleich kristalliner Klarheit. Zwischen erdiger Direktheit und spaciger Weite entfaltet sich ein Sound, der tief geht und dabei stets in Bewegung bleibt. Niḷa – Sanskrit für „Blau“ – ist wie ein musikalischer Saphir: facettenreich, geheimnisvoll, kühl und leuchtend. Ragawerk zeigen sich hier so kompromisslos wie vielschichtig.

Max Clouth ging nach seinem Studium der Jazzgitarre an der Hochschule für Musik Mainz und der Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden nach Indien. Drei Jahre hat er in Mumbai gelebt und dort Musik studiert, ist tief in das Land, seine Traditionen und Klänge eingetaucht. Später folgte ein Studium der Filmmusik an der Filmakademie Ludwigsburg. Max Clouth ist Preisträger des Frankfurter Jazzstipendiums und wurde für den Deutschen Filmmusikpreis nominiert.

Martin Standke studierte Musik an der Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt und an der Musikhochschule Köln im Hauptfach Jazz-Schlagzeug. Mit dem „Contrast Trio“ ist er Preisträger des Hessischen Jazzpreises. Viermal wurde er in Zusammenarbeit mit unterschiedlichen Bands mit dem Frankfurter Arbeitsstipendium Jazz ausgezeichnet.

Vroni Frisch ist eine Bassistin, Komponistin und Arrangeurin aus Mainz. Sie hat dort an der Musikhochschule Jazz-E-Bass sowie Komposition studiert und ist als freiberufliche Musikerin tätig. Stilistisch ist sie in diversen Genres unterwegs: von Pop/HipHop live oder im Studio u.a. für MINE, Fatoni, Edgar Wasser und Leopold, über improvisierten Rock mit der legendären Krautrock-Band Space Debris bis hin zu Jazz in verschiedensten Formationen.

Paul Janoschka ist Absolvent der Hochschule für Musik in Mannheim (BA). Vor kurzem ist er nach Deutschland zurückgekehrt, nachdem er in den letzten zwei Jahren am New York City College sein Master-Studium bei Fred Harsch und Kevin Hays absolviert hat und als viel gefragter Pianist in verschiedenen Bands Teil der dortigen Jazzszene war.

Ragawerk, led by guitarist Max Clouth and drummer Martin Standke, blends analogue warmth with electronic finesse, hypnotic loops with improvisational freedom. Their sound is cosmopolitan yet grounded: jazz, krautrock and Indian traditions merge into a distinct musical vision. Ragawerk is not a crossover project – it is a creative laboratory where Eastern depth meets Western precision. At times meditative, at times energetic – but always clear, intense and full of surprises.

With Niḷa, Ragawerk presents their second album, expanding their sonic spectrum with new and unexpected dimensions. The sound is rawer, more immediate, more angular than before – with a stronger sense of “German-ness” and, at the same time, crystalline clarity. Between earthy directness and spacious cosmic horizons unfolds a music that moves deeply while constantly shifting. Niḷa – Sanskrit for “blue” – is like a musical sapphire: multi-faceted, mysterious, cool and radiant. Ragawerk reveals itself here as uncompromising as it is layered.

Max Clouth studied jazz guitar at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz and the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden before moving to India. He lived in Mumbai for three years, studying music and immersing himself deeply in the country’s traditions and sonic worlds. He later completed a degree in film scoring at the Filmakademie Ludwigsburg. Clouth is a recipient of the Frankfurt Jazz Scholarship and has been nominated for the German Film Music Award.

Martin Standke studied music at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt and at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Cologne, majoring in jazz drums. With the Contrast Trio, he received the Hessian Jazz Award. He has also been awarded the Frankfurt Jazz Working Grant four times in collaboration with various bands.

Vroni Frisch is a bassist, composer and arranger from Mainz, where she studied jazz electric bass and composition at the local conservatory. She now works as a freelance musician and moves fluidly between genres: performing and recording pop and hip-hop with artists such as MINE, Fatoni, Edgar Wasser and Leopold; playing improvised rock with the legendary krautrock band Space Debris; and appearing in a wide variety of jazz ensembles.

Paul Janoschka holds a bachelor’s degree from the Mannheim University of Music. He recently returned to Germany after completing his master’s studies at the City College of New York, where he studied with Fred Hersch and Kevin Hays. During his time in New York, he became a highly sought-after pianist and an active part of the city’s jazz scene.
