Ein Ensemble der Superlative: Die europäischen und amerikanischen Jazzlegenden Alex von Schlippenbach und Barry Altschul vereinen sich zu einem neuen Quartett und bilden gemeinsam mit dem Bassklarinettisten Rudi Mahall und dem Bassisten Joe Fonda ein musikalisches Gipfeltreffen. Das Programm umfasst freie Improvisation, Eigenkompositionen und besondere Arrangements von Jazzklassikern. Nach dem erfolgreichen Auftritt des Trios Alex von Schlippenbach, Barry Altschul und Joe Fonda beim Free Jazz Festival in Saarbrücken 2022 entstand die Idee zu einer weiteren Zusammenarbeit.

Alexander von Schlippenbach gilt als einer der Begründer der europäischen Free-Jazz-Szene. Er war Initiator und Leiter des Globe Unity Orchestra mit Mitgliedern wie Peter Brötzmann, Manfred Schoof, Jaki Liebezeit, Mani Neumeier, Toshinori Kondo, Paul Lovens und anderen sowie des Schlippenbach Trios. Als Schüler des Avantgarde-Komponisten Bernd Alois Zimmermann, der sich nie gänzlich von der musikalischen Tradition löste, beziehen sich Schlippenbachs Werke immer wieder auf die Jazztradition oder die Zwölftonmusik.

Barry Altschul ist ein New Yorker Schlagzeuger, der jahrelang Mitglied des Paul Bley Trios war, die Band Circle mit Chick Corea, Dave Holland und Anthony Braxton gründete und in unzähligen Projekten mit Sam Rivers und Billy Bang sowie anderen weltweit tourte. Eine vollständige Liste seiner Konzerte, Tourneen und Aufnahmen wäre kaum möglich.

Rudi Mahall gehört zu den Bassklarinettisten, die furchtlos neue Wege auf ihrem Instrument beschreiten und sich unter anderem durch die Einspielung des Gesamtwerks von Thelonious Monk unter dem Titel „Monk’s Casino“ europaweit einen Namen gemacht haben. Sein Witz und Humor, gepaart mit der Ernsthaftigkeit, mit der er die Kompositionen behandelt, sind ein wahrer Genuss.

icht zuletzt: Joe Fonda am Bass. Er gilt als vielseitiger Bassist, der nicht nur in Jazzformationen mit Anthony Braxton, Barry Altschul und Archie Shepp sowie in eigenen Formationen gespielt hat, sondern sich auch interdisziplinär mit Tanz und Musik beschäftigt und mit Tanzensembles zusammenarbeitet.

A band of superlatives: European and American jazz legends Alex von Schlippenbach and Barry Altschul come together in a new quartet and form a musical summit meeting together with bass clarinettist Rudi Mahall and bassist Joe Fonda. The programme consists of free improvisation, their own compositions and special arrangements of jazz classics.Just after a successful performance of the trio Alex von Schlippenbach, Barry Altschul and Joe Fonda at the Free Jazz Festival in Saarbrücken 2022, the idea of a further collaboration arose.

Alex von Schlippenbach is considered one of the founders of the European free jazz scene, the initiator and leader of the Globe Unity Orchestra with members such as Peter Brötzmann, Manfred Schoof, Jaki Liebezeit, Mani Neumeier, Toshinori Kondo, Paul Lovens and others, as well as the Schlippenbach Trio. It would be difficult to give a complete list of his concerts, tours and recordings.

Rudi Mahall is one of the bass clarinettists who fearlessly break new ground on the instrument and gained fame throughout Europe, among other projects, by recording the complete works of Thelonius Monk called Monk’s Casino. His wit and humour with simultaneous seriousness towards the composition is a real joy.

Last but not least: Joe Fonda on bass. He is regarded as a busy jack-of-all-trades on the bass, who has not only played in jazz formations with Anthony Braxton, Barry Altschul, Archie Shepp or in his own formations, but is also involved in dance and music in an interdisciplinary way and works together with dance ensembles.
