With their sixth album “What We Are Made Of,” released in March 2026 on the renowned German jazz label ACT, Israeli piano trio SHALOSH once again present their very own approach to modern jazz. Gadi Stern, David Michaeli and Matan Assayag have been playing together for more than ten years, developing a musical language that draws as naturally on rock and pop as it does on classical and Arabic music. Powerful grooves, sudden rhythmic shifts and extended improvisations are just as much a part of their repertoire as lyrical, almost chamber music-like passages. It is no coincidence that the three musicians count The Bad Plus, alongside Nirvana and Brahms, among their musical influences.
On their new album, SHALOSH take this openness even further. Alongside original compositions, the record features highly unusual interpretations of Muse’s “Hysteria,” Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” and even Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” Rather than simply playing jazz versions of these songs, the trio fundamentally rework their rhythms, harmonies and sound. “Hysteria,” for example, gets its distinctive rock character partly from a distorted double bass, while “Don’t Look Back in Anger” is transformed into a shuffle. With “What We Are Made Of,” SHALOSH demonstrate just how much musical territory remains to be explored within the classic piano trio format, even after more than a decade of playing together.
