Drei herausragende Persönlichkeiten der New Yorker Improvisationsszene treffen in Short Cuts aufeinander: Pianistin Sylvie Courvoisier, Saxophonist und Klarinettist Ned Rothenberg und Schlagzeuger Nasheet Waits. Das kollektiv geführte Trio verbindet die Tradition des progressiven Jazz von Ornette Coleman bis John Zorn mit Einflüssen zeitgenössischer Kammermusik und vollkommen freier Improvisation.
Die ungewöhnliche Besetzung ohne Bass schafft dabei zusätzlichen Raum. Courvoisier und Rothenberg können sich frei zwischen hohen und tiefen Registern bewegen, während Waits rhythmisch alle Möglichkeiten offenstehen. Die Musik von Short Cuts entsteht vollständig im Moment und lebt vom unmittelbaren Zusammenspiel der drei Musiker.
Die schweizerische Pianistin und Komponistin Sylvie Courvoisier lebt seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten in New York und gehört zu den profiliertesten Musikerinnen an der Schnittstelle von Jazz, Improvisation und zeitgenössischer Musik. Sie arbeitete unter anderem mit John Zorn, Wadada Leo Smith, Evan Parker, Fred Frith, Andrew Cyrille, Christian Fennesz und Mary Halvorson. 2022 erhielt sie den Deutschen Jazzpreis als Pianistin des Jahres international, 2025 folgten der Schweizer Grand Prix Musik und ein Music Award der American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Der Schlagzeuger Nasheet Waits gehört seit vielen Jahren zu den gefragten Musikern der New Yorker Jazz- und Improvisationsszene. Er arbeitete unter anderem mit Jason Moran, Dave Holland und Christian McBride und bildet gemeinsam mit Pianist Orrin Evans und Bassist Eric Revis das Trio Tarbaby. Sein Spiel verbindet rhythmischen Drive mit der Offenheit und Flexibilität freier Improvisation.
Three outstanding figures of New York’s improvising scene come together in Short Cuts: pianist Sylvie Courvoisier, saxophonist and clarinetist Ned Rothenberg and drummer Nasheet Waits. The collectively led trio draws on the progressive jazz tradition from Ornette Coleman to John Zorn, alongside influences from contemporary chamber music and completely free improvisation.
The unusual line-up without a bass creates additional space. Courvoisier and Rothenberg can move freely between high and low registers, while Waits has greater rhythmic freedom. The music of Short Cuts is created entirely in the moment and shaped by the immediate interaction between the three musicians.
Swiss pianist and composer Sylvie Courvoisier has lived in New York for more than two decades and is one of the leading musicians working at the intersection of jazz, improvisation and contemporary music. Drummer Nasheet Waits has long been one of the most in-demand musicians on New York’s jazz and improvisation scene. He has worked with artists including Jason Moran, Dave Holland and Christian McBride and forms the trio Tarbaby with pianist Orrin Evans and bassist Eric Revis. His playing combines rhythmic drive with the openness and flexibility of free improvisation.
