Mit Wayne Shorter widmet sich dieses Quintett einem der größten Komponisten und Saxophonisten der Jazzgeschichte. Von den Jazz Messengers über das legendäre zweite Miles Davis Quintet und Weather Report bis zu seinen späten Quartetten hat Shorter die Entwicklung des Jazz über mehr als sechs Jahrzehnte entscheidend mitgeprägt. Kompositionen wie „Footprints“, „Nefertiti“, „Speak No Evil“ oder „Witch Hunt“ gehören längst zum festen Kanon dieser Musik.
Für diesen besonderen Abend versammelt Schlagzeuger Andrea Marcelli mit Gianni Gagliardi, Christoph Titz, Tino Derado und Thiago Duarte fünf international erfahrene Musiker der Berliner Jazzszene. Dabei besteht auch eine direkte Verbindung zu Wayne Shorter: Bereits 1989 wirkte Shorter an Marcellis Album „Silent Will“ mit, das bei Verve Forecast erschien. Das Quintett nimmt Shorters Kompositionen und sein musikalisches Erbe zum Ausgangspunkt für einen Abend zu Ehren eines der einflussreichsten Musiker des modernen Jazz.
Der aus Barcelona stammende Saxophonist Gianni Gagliardi spielte weltweit zwischen Jazz und Flamenco und arbeitete unter anderem mit Al Foster, John Clayton, Gilad Hekselman und Jordi Rossy. Er studierte am Berklee College of Music, der State University of New York, dem Conservatorium van Amsterdam und dem Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris und gründete das BCN Jazz Collective.
Der Trompeter Christoph Titz bewegt sich seit vielen Jahren zwischen Jazz, Latin, Funk und elektronischer Musik. Nach seiner Zeit mit der Jazz-Funk-Fusion-Band Scetches arbeitete er unter anderem mit WDR Big Band, Carl Craig, Ebo Taylor, Marla Glen, Moritz von Oswald und Reinhard Mey. Seit 2002 veröffentlichte er zahlreiche Alben mit eigenen Projekten.
Der Pianist Tino Derado studierte am Berklee College of Music in Boston und an der New School in New York und lebte mehr als 13 Jahre in der Stadt. Dort etablierte er sich in der Jazz- und Latin-Szene und arbeitete unter anderem mit Gary Burton, Peter Erskine, Randy Brecker, Dave Liebman, Richard Bona und Fred Hersch. Seit 2014 ist er Professor an der Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover.
Der aus Südbrasilien stammende Bassist Thiago Duarte ist seit vielen Jahren in der brasilianischen und internationalen Musikszene aktiv. Er spielte unter anderem mit João Donato, Egberto Gismonti, João Bosco, Airto Moreira und Flora Purim.
Der italienische Schlagzeuger und Komponist Andrea Marcelli zog 1989 in die USA und lebte zunächst in Los Angeles, später in New York. Auf seinem Album „Silent Will“ arbeitete er mit Wayne Shorter, Allan Holdsworth, Mike Stern, Bob Berg, John Patitucci, Mitchel Forman und Alex Acuña zusammen. Es folgten weitere eigene Veröffentlichungen und Zusammenarbeiten mit Musikern wie Ralph Towner, Eddie Gomez, Bob Mintzer und Gary Willis. Seit 2001 lebt Marcelli in Berlin.
With Wayne Shorter, this quintet celebrates one of the greatest composers and saxophonists in jazz history. From the Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis’ legendary second quintet to Weather Report and his late quartets, Shorter played a decisive role in shaping the development of jazz for more than six decades. Compositions such as “Footprints”, “Nefertiti”, “Speak No Evil” and “Witch Hunt” have long become part of the essential jazz repertoire.
For this special evening, drummer Andrea Marcelli brings together Gianni Gagliardi, Christoph Titz, Tino Derado and Thiago Duarte, five internationally experienced musicians from the Berlin jazz scene. The project also has a direct connection to Wayne Shorter: in 1989, Shorter appeared on Marcelli’s album “Silent Will”, released on Verve Forecast. The quintet takes Shorter’s compositions and musical legacy as the starting point for an evening celebrating one of the most influential musicians in modern jazz.
