WAAN ist das gemeinsame Projekt des Saxophonisten Bart Wirtz und des Keyboarders Emiel van Rijthoven. Zusammen mit Bassist Matteo Mazzú und Schlagzeuger Mark Schilders formen sie einen Sound, der die Grenzen zwischen elektronischer und akustischer Musik, Club-Energie und Jazzimprovisation bewusst verwischt. Seit ihrem Debüt steht WAAN für einen rohen, abenteuerlustigen Stil – groovebasierte Elektronik trifft auf atmosphärische Melodien und große improvisatorische Freiheit. Im Studio arbeiten sie eng mit Produzent Oscar de Jong (Kraak & Smaak) zusammen.

Ihr erstes Album „Echo Echo“ (Sonar Kollektiv, 2023) erhielt internationale Anerkennung, wurde für zwei Edison Jazz Awards nominiert und lief u. a. in BBC-Sendungen von Jamie Cullum. Es folgte eine ausgedehnte Tour durch zahlreiche Festivals und renommierte Spielstätten wie Paradiso, Bimhuis, Transition, So What’s Next, Amersfoort Jazz, RAUW, InJazz, Eurosonic, Jazzahead (DE), Garana Jazz Festival (RO) oder den Opus Jazzclub (HU).

2024 veröffentlichte die Band eine Live-EP, die das Spannungsfeld zwischen akustischem Zusammenspiel und elektronischen Klangflächen auf der Bühne eindrucksvoll einfängt. Am 23. Januar 2026 erschien schließlich ihr zweites Album „We Want WAAN“, erneut bei Sonar Kollektiv – ein weiterer Schritt in der konsequenten Weiterentwicklung dieses eigenständigen, energiegeladenen Band-Sounds.

WAAN is the brainchild of saxophonist Bart Wirtz and keyboardist Emiel van Rijthoven. Together with bassist Matteo Mazzú and drummer Mark Schilders, they shape a sound that blurs the lines between electronic and acoustic music, dancefloor energy and jazz improvisation. Since their debut, WAAN has become known for a raw, adventurous style—merging groove-based electronics, atmospheric melodies, and improvisational freedom. In the studio they work closely with producer Oscar de Jong (Kraak & Smaak).

Their debut album Echo Echo (Sonar Kollektiv, 2023) received international acclaim, two Edison Jazz Award nominations, and airplay on BBC shows hosted by Jamie Cullum. The album led to an extensive tour of festivals and venues including Paradiso, Bimhuis, Transition, So What’s Next, Amersfoort Jazz, RAUW, InJazz, Eurosonic, Jazzahead (DE), Garana Jazz Festival (RO), Opus jazzclub (HU) and more. In 2024, WAAN released a live EP, capturing the tension between acoustic interplay and electronic textures on stage. On January 23, 2026 WAAN have released their second album We Want WAAN, on Sonar Kollektiv.
