Nach ihrer Asien-Ozeanien-Tournee – von Java Jazz Festival (Indonesien) über Australien bis nach China – kehrt das Alexandra Ivanova Trio zurück ins Zig Zag und präsentiert neue Kompositionen!

Unter der Leitung der österreichischen Pianistin mit bulgarischen Wurzeln Alexandra Ivanova ist das Trio bekannt für Performances, die nicht nur musikalisch berühren, sondern auch eine tiefgründige Botschaft über Identität und das Aufwachsen zwischen Kulturen vermitteln. Gemeinsam mit Kontrabassist Igor Spallati und Perkussionist András Dés erschafft das Trio Klangwelten, die von Migration und plurikultureller Zugehörigkeit erzählen – zwischen Jazz, Maqam, arabischer klassischer Musik, den ungeraden Rhythmen des Balkans und afrokubanischen Claven.

Alexandras Kompositionen schöpfen aus einer tiefen Reise ins Selbst und der Auseinandersetzung mit ihrer Familiengeschichte im Dorf ihrer verstorbenen Großeltern. Ihre Arrangements von azerischen, arabischen, bulgarischen und isländischen Stücken laden das Publikum ein, für einen Abend die Welt aus den Augen eines anderen zu betrachten.

Ihr Debütalbum „Beauty in Chaos“ erschien 2023 in der renommierten Reihe „Jazz thing Next Generation Vol. 99“ (DoubleMoon / Challenge Records). Anschließend tourte das Trio durch Ägypten, Deutschland, Österreich und Saudi-Arabien und wurde als Jazzahead! Showcase 2024 ausgewählt.

Seither präsentierte das Trio seine Musik u. a. beim Cairo Jazz Festival (2023), Havana Jazz Plaza Festival (2024), PENG Festival (2024), Esprit du Piano Festival Bordeaux (2025), Java Jazz Festival (2026) und dem Montreux Jazz Festival China (2026).

ALEXANDRA IVANOVA ist eine in Berlin lebende österreichische Pianistin und Komponistin bulgarischer Herkunft, die zuvor auch in Frankreich und dem Nahen Osten lebte. Nach ihrer klassischen Klavierausbildung lernte sie Jazz zunächst überwiegend autodidaktisch, bevor sie in Tarek Yamani einen prägenden Mentor fand.

Als unkonventionelle Musikerin bewegt sie sich zwischen Disziplinen, Kulturen und Genres und verbindet Polyrhythmen, Maqam-basierte Musik und afrokubanische Einflüsse, die sie unter anderem mit Ruy Lopez-Nussaund Alexis Bosch vertiefte. Die Vielzahl ihrer kulturellen Erfahrungen verleiht ihr einen „unorthodoxen Kompositionsansatz“ (All About Jazz).

Für ihre Kompositionsarbeit erhielt Alexandra mehrere Jazz-Stipendien und Förderungen, darunter vom Musikfonds, dem Berliner Senat und dem Goethe-Institut.

Sie präsentierte ihre Musik unter anderem beim Java Jazz Festival 2026, Havana Jazz Plaza Festival 2024, PENG Festival 2024, Reykjavik Jazz Festival, im Porgy & Bess Wien, BIX Stuttgart und Unterfahrt München sowie auf internationalen Bühnen in Australien, China, Indonesien, Ägypten, Saudi-Arabien, Kuba, Frankreich, den Niederlanden, England und den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten.

Zuletzt war sie Artist in Residence in Banff (Kanada) und Havanna (Kuba).

IGOR SPALLATI: Nach seinem klassischen Kontrabassstudium in Italien, unter anderem bei Franco Petracchi, zog Igor Spallati nach Berlin, wo er seine Ausbildung am Jazz-Institut Berlin bei Greg Cohen, John Hollenbeck und Kurt Rosenwinkelfortsetzte.

Als vielseitiger Musiker bewegt er sich zwischen Jazz, Klassik, Neuer Musik, Rock, Balkanmusik und brasilianischer Musik. Als gefragter Sideman konzertierte er auf renommierten Bühnen in Europa, Asien und dem Nahen Osten.

Zu seinen musikalischen Partnern zählen unter anderem Henry Threadgill (Zooid), Billy Hart, Fred Hersch, Joe Chambers, Randy Brecker, Stewart Copeland, Joe Hisaishi, Ambrose Akinmusire, David Gilmour, John Scofield, Ethan Iverson sowie die HR Bigband.

ANDRÁS DÉS ist ein ungarischer Jazz- und Improvisationsmusiker, der heute in Wien lebt. Er entwickelte ein einzigartiges Spielkonzept: Mit der rechten Hand spielt er wie ein Schlagzeuger, mit der linken wie ein Perkussionist.

Nach seinem Studium an der Franz-Liszt-Musikakademie entwickelte er sich zu einem der vielseitigsten europäischen Perkussionisten und tourte weltweit. Er spielte auf bedeutenden Bühnen wie der Carnegie Hall, Covent Garden, dem Concertgebouw Amsterdam, dem Damaskus-Opernhaus, dem Jerusalem Theatre, dem Cairo Jazz Festival und der Shanghai World Expo.

Als Perkussionist wirkte er an über 100 Alben mit und veröffentlichte vier Alben als Bandleader. Darüber hinaus arbeitete er mit Künstlern wie Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Mariano, Palle Mikkelborg, Frank London, Eric Truffaz, Chris Potter und dem bedeutenden zeitgenössischen Komponisten Péter Eötvös zusammen.

After their Asia–Oceania Tour – from the Java Jazz Festival (Indonesia) through Australia to China – the Alexandra Ivanova Trio returns to Zig Zag to offer a sneak peek into brand-new compositions!

Led by the Austrian pianist of Bulgarian roots Alexandra Ivanova, the trio is known for performances that are not only musically touching but also feature storytelling about identity and intercultural upbringing. Together with double bassist Igor Spallati and percussionist András Dés, the trio creates music shaped by migration and pluricultural belonging, blending jazz, maqam, classical Arabic music, the odd metres of the Balkans, and Afro-Cuban claves.

Alexandra’s compositions draw from a deep journey into the self and an exploration of her ancestry’s history in the village of her late grandparents. Her arrangements of Azeri, Arabic, Bulgarian, and Icelandic pieces invite the audience to walk in someone else’s shoes for an evening and see the world through their eyes.

ALEXANDRA IVANOVA is a Berlin-based Austrian pianist and composer of Bulgarian heritage who has also lived in France and the Middle East. After receiving a classical piano education as a child, she taught herself jazz before later finding an important mentor in Tarek Yamani.

As an unconventional musician, she moves between disciplines, cultures, and genres, combining polyrhythms, maqam-based music, and Afro-Cuban influences, which she further explored with Ruy Lopez-Nussa and Alexis Bosch. The diversity of her cultural experiences gives her an "unorthodox compositional approach" (All About Jazz).

Alexandra has received several jazz scholarships and grants for her composition and research, including support from the Musikfonds, the Berlin Senate, the Goethe-Institut, Initiative Musik, and MusicBoard Berlin.

She has performed at the Java Jazz Festival 2026, Havana Jazz Plaza Festival 2024, PENG Festival 2024, Reykjavik Jazz Festival, Porgy & Bess Vienna, Unterfahrt Munich, and on international stages across Australia, China, Indonesia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the UAE.

Most recently, she was Artist in Residence at the Banff Centre (Canada) and in Havana (Cuba).

IGOR SPALLATI: After studying classical double bass in Italy, including with Franco Petracchi, Igor Spallati moved to Berlin to continue his education at the Jazz Institute Berlin under Greg Cohen, John Hollenbeck, and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

A versatile musician, he has performed across jazz, classical music, contemporary music, rock, Balkan music, and Brazilian music, appearing on renowned stages throughout Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

His collaborators include Henry Threadgill (Zooid), Billy Hart, Fred Hersch, Joe Chambers, Randy Brecker, Stewart Copeland, Joe Hisaishi, Ambrose Akinmusire, David Gilmour, John Scofield, Ethan Iverson, and the HR Big Band.

ANDRÁS DÉS is a Hungarian jazz and improvising musician based in Vienna. He has developed a unique performance concept: with his right hand he plays like a drummer, while with his left hand he performs like a percussionist.

After graduating from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, he became one of Europe's most versatile percussionists, touring internationally. He has performed on world-renowned stages including Carnegie Hall, Covent Garden, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Damascus Opera House, the Jerusalem Theatre, the Cairo Jazz Festival, and the Shanghai World Expo.

As a percussionist, he has contributed to more than 100 albums, including four albums as a bandleader. He has also collaborated with artists such as Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Mariano, Palle Mikkelborg, Frank London, Eric Truffaz, Chris Potter, and the acclaimed contemporary composer Péter Eötvös.
