AFICIONADO – Flamenco Moro bringt zwei Traditionen zusammen, die einander näher sind, als es auf den ersten Blick scheint: den Flamenco und die maurisch-andalusische Musik Marokkos. Alaa Zouiten entdeckte den Flamenco über Paco de Lucía, lernte ihn ab 2015 in Andalusien – und fand dabei die Musik seines eigenen Landes wieder. Die Flamenco-Palos geben die Form vor, das Material bewegt sich frei zwischen den beiden Ufern: Ein Fandango öffnet sich zu einer alten andalusischen Nuba, ein Tango klingt rhythmisch nordafrikanisch, ein arabisches Samai führt in eine Soleá flamenca. Getragen wird das alles von der Oud. Das gleichnamige Album AFICIONADO – Flamenco Moro erschien im April 2025 und wurde von Songlines mit vier Sternen ausgezeichnet. Im Zig Zag ist die Musik im Quartett zu hören – mit Gitarre, Violine und Perkussion. Die Grenzen fallen und geben den Horizont frei – für die Schönheit der Musik.
ALAA ZOUITEN ist Oudspieler und Komponist in Berlin. Geboren in Casablanca und ausgebildet am Conservatoire National de Marrakech, begann er seine Laufbahn in der marokkanischen Fusion als Mitglied der Gnawa-Rock-Band Jbara. Seither bewegt er sich zwischen Jazzrock, arabisch-andalusischem Repertoire, Flamenco, Orchestermusik und Theater: Auf sein Debüt Hada Makan (2012) folgte Talking Oud (2015), in dem er die klanglichen und technischen Grenzen seines Instruments auslotete. Als Solist und musikalischer Leiter arbeitete er mit dem Global Arabian Music Orchestra in der Berliner Philharmonie, mit dem Babylon Orchestra beim Bachfest Leipzig und an der Neuköllner Oper, wo er in Haydar Tanzt über vierzig Mal auf der Bühne stand; 2025 leitete er die Uraufführung von Memories of Alhambra am Royal Opera House Muscat (Oman). Sein Album AFICIONADO – Flamenco Moro (2025) erhielt vier Sterne in Songlines und war unter anderem auf der Bienal del Flamenco in Sevilla und auf Tournee in China zu hören. Seine Arbeit beruht auf dem, was er plaisir transculturel nennt: dem Vergnügen daran, sich zwischen Traditionen zu bewegen.
NAOUFAL MONTASSERE ist ein marokkanischer Gitarrist, der in Berlin lebt und Flamenco- und Latin-Gitarre mit orientalischen Einflüssen verbindet, ohne dass eine der musikalischen Sprachen ihre Eigenart verliert. 2021 erschien das Duoalbum Serendipia mit dem argentinischen Gitarristen Diego Romero, 2022 folgte sein Soloalbum Osoul. In Berlin leitet er außerdem sein eigenes Naoufal Montassere Quartett.
AYMAN HLAL, 1985 im syrischen As-Suwayda geboren, studierte Violine an der Al-Baath-Universität in Homs und lebt seit 2016 in Berlin. Er spielt als Solist und Dirigent mit dem Syrian Expat Philharmonic Orchestra, Nai' Oriental Orchestra und Babylon Orchestra und veröffentlichte zwei eigene Alben mit Azuleo und dem Tawabil Project. 2026 erhielt er den Bagri Music Award.
ANTONIO MORENO „PUMUKI“, 1972 in Cieza (Murcia) geboren, kam über Rock und Metal zum Flamenco und arbeitete elf Jahre in Madrid, davon acht am renommierten Tablao Cardamomo. Er spielte und arbeitete mit herausragenden Persönlichkeiten des Flamenco wie Enrique Morente, Tomatito, Diego „El Cigala“, Carles Benavent und Jorge Pardo und ist heute fester Bestandteil der Berliner Flamencoszene, unter anderem mit Azuleo. Am Centro Flamenco Berlin unterrichtet er Cajón und Flamenco-Rhythmik.

AFICIONADO – Flamenco Moro brings together two traditions that are closer than they might seem at first glance: flamenco and the Moorish-Andalusian music of Morocco. Alaa Zouiten discovered flamenco through Paco de Lucía, began studying it in Andalusia in 2015 – and in the process rediscovered the music of his own country. Flamenco palos provide the framework, while the musical material moves freely between the two shores: a fandango opens into an ancient Andalusian nuba, a tango takes on North African rhythms, and an Arabic samai leads into a flamenco soleá. At the heart of it all is the oud. The album AFICIONADO – Flamenco Moro was released in April 2025 and awarded four stars by Songlines. At Zig Zag, the music can be experienced in a quartet setting with guitar, violin and percussion. Boundaries dissolve, opening up a new horizon – for the beauty of the music.
ALAA ZOUITEN is an oud player and composer based in Berlin. Born in Casablanca and trained at the Conservatoire National de Marrakech, he began his career in Moroccan fusion as a member of the Gnawa-rock band Jbara. NAOUFAL MONTASSERE is a Moroccan guitarist based in Berlin whose music combines flamenco and Latin guitar with Oriental influences, while allowing each musical language to retain its own character. In 2021, he released the duo album Serendipia with Argentinian guitarist Diego Romero, followed by his solo album Osoul in 2022. In Berlin, he also leads his own Naoufal Montassere Quartet.
