Billie Holiday, die vielleicht größte Jazzsängerin, die je gelebt hat, tat dies nur viel zu kurze 44 Jahre. Und trotz der Tatsache, dass se nicht einmal Noten lesen konnte ist der Einfluss, den sie hatte, unermesslich. Sie beeinflusste Generationen von Musikerinnen und Musikern, die nach ihr kamen, aber ihre Fähigkeit, Trauer mit Freude zu verbinden, bleibt unvergleichlich. Mit ihrer unendlich entspannten Phrasierung und ihrer unverwechselbaren Stimme wurde sie zu einem der größten Stars ihrer Zeit und bleibt bis heute ein Gigant des Jazz.

Grund genug also, "Lady Day” einen Abend im ZigZag-Jazzclub zu widmen. Eine Band, bestehend aus fünf der besten jungen Jazzmusikerinnen und -musiker Berlins, wird Sie auf eine Reise durch einige von Billies Lieblingsstücken mitnehmen.

Mette Nadja Hansen wurde im Alter von zehn Jahren vom „Danish National Girls Choir“ entdeckt und ausgebildet. Bald fand die dänische Sängerin auch die Liebe zum Jazz, inspiriert durch Vorbilder wie Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong und Sarah Vaughan. 2013 kam sie an das Jazz-Institut Berlin, wo sie 2017 ihren Bachelor-Abschluss machte und außerdem eine Leidenschaft für das Percussionspiel entwickelte. Neben ihrer Hingabe zum Old-School Swing Jazz bedient sie viele weitere musikalische Spektren. Seit 2016 singt sie mit dem brasilianischen „Mariana Zwarg Sexteto Universal“. Außerdem arbeitete sie mit Künstlern und Ensembles wie Snorre Kirk, Carsten Dahl, Alex Riel, Jesper Løvdal, Christian von der Goltz Trio, Markus Ehrlich’s Flexible Eingreiftruppe und Johannes von Ballestrem.

Eldar Tsalikov zog 2011 nach ersten Studien in seiner Heimat nach Berlin, wo er sein Studium am Jazz-Institut Berlin begann und die Klarinette zum Saxophon als zweites Instrument dazunahm. 2018 schloss Eldar das Institut mit dem Bachelor-Abschluss als Instrumentalist sowie dem Master-Abschluss als Arrangeur und Komponist ab. Als vielseitiger Musiker arbeitet er in unterschiedlichsten Bereichen des Jazz – von traditionellen Stilen wie Hot Jazz und Swing bis zu modernen Formen des Jazz und experimenteller Musik. Dabei arbeitete er unter anderem mit Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, Laurie Anderson, Elias Stemeseder, Manlio Maresca, „The HAF“ und Anna Webbers „Percussive Mechanics“ zusammen.

Declan Forde ist ein schottischer Pianist, der seit 2014 in Berlin lebt. Seine Arbeit bewegt sich an den Schnittstellen von Jazztradition und zeitgenössischer improvisierter Musik. Er tritt regelmäßig als Solist sowie in kollaborativen Projekten auf und spielte bereits mit Künstlern wie Han Bennink, Tony Malaby, Michael Attias, Doug Weiss, Andrea Parkins, Tobias Delius und Jeff Williams. Das Duo Practically Married mit dem Bassisten James Banner veröffentlichte bislang sieben Aufnahmen, darunter „Practically Married“ (2023), das direkt auf analoges Tonband in den Emil Berliner Studios aufgenommen wurde. Forde leitet außerdem ein Trio mit Igor Spallati und Ugo Alunni und arbeitet seit über einem Jahrzehnt mit der schottischen Singer-Songwriterin Rachel Sermanni zusammen.

James Banner ist ein Musiker und Komponist, der in Berlin lebt. Er tritt in einer Vielzahl von Konstellationen in den Bereichen Jazz, improvisierte und zeitgenössische Musik auf, darunter James Banner’s USINE, Birgitta Flick Quartet und Tilo Weber Quartet: Four Fauns. Seine Musik wurde von der BBC, der PRS Foundation, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, der Initiative Musik und dem Berliner Senat unterstützt und vorgestellt. Gemeinsam mit Declan Forde kuratiert er die monatliche Residency Practically Married im Berliner Donau115 und ist Gastdozent für Improvisation am Leeds College of Music.

Ugo Alunni ist ein Schlagzeuger aus Perugia, Italien. Er besuchte das Conservatorio di Musica "Francesco Morlacchi" di Perugia (2000-2004) und zog danach nach New York, um an der Collective School of Music (2005-2006) weiter zu studieren. Seit 2010 lebt er in Berlin, wo er am Jazz Institut Berlin unter der Leitung von John Hollenbeck, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Cohen und David Friedman studierte und 2016 seinen Abschluss machte. Er hat mit Rossano Emili, Perugia Jazz Orchestra, Pietro Tonolo, Joe Chambers, Dan Kinzelman, Alessandro Lanzoni, Elias Stemeseder, Phil Donkin, Uli Kempendorff, Julia Hülsmann und vielen anderen gespielt.

Billie Holiday, perhaps the greatest jazz singer who ever lived, did so for a far too short 44 years. And despite the fact that se couldn't even read music, the impact she had is immeasurable. She influenced generations of musicians who came after her, but her ability to combine grief with joy remains unparalleled. With her infinitely relaxed phrasing and distinctive voice, she became one of the biggest stars of her time and remains a giant of jazz to this day.

Reason enough, then, to dedicate an evening to "Lady Day" at the ZigZag jazz club. A band consisting of five of Berlin's best young jazz musicians will take you on a journey through some of Billie's favorite pieces.

As a versatile musician, he works in a wide range of jazz styles – from traditional forms such as hot jazz and swing to modern jazz and experimental music. He has collaborated with artists including Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, Laurie Anderson, Elias Stemeseder, Manlio Maresca, The HAF and Anna Webber’s Percussive Mechanics.

Declan Forde is a Scottish pianist who has been based in Berlin since 2014. His work explores the intersections between the jazz tradition and contemporary improvised music. He regularly performs as a soloist and in collaborative projects and has played with artists including Han Bennink, Tony Malaby, Michael Attias, Doug Weiss, Andrea Parkins, Tobias Delius and Jeff Williams. His duo Practically Married with bassist James Banner has released seven recordings to date, including “Practically Married” (2023), recorded directly to analogue tape at the Emil Berliner Studios. Forde also leads a trio with Igor Spallati and Ugo Alunni and has worked with Scottish singer-songwriter Rachel Sermanni for more than a decade.
