Der Grammy-nominierte Trompeter, Komponist und Produzent Theo Croker gehört zu den markantesten Stimmen einer Generation, für die Jazz, Hip-Hop, Soul und elektronische Musik längst Teil derselben musikalischen Sprache sind. Mit seinem aktuellen Projekt „Dream Manifest“ führt er diesen Weg weiter und verbindet die Spontaneität einer akustischen Jazzband mit Samples, elektronischen Sounds und einer von Hip-Hop geprägten Produktionsästhetik.

Croker stammt aus einer bemerkenswerten musikalischen Familie: Sein Großvater war der Trompeter Doc Cheatham, der unter anderem mit Cab Calloway, Teddy Wilson und Billie Holiday spielte. Croker selbst studierte bei Donald Byrd und wurde später von Dee Dee Bridgewater gefördert, die 2014 sein Album „Afro Physicist“ produzierte. Es folgten „Escape Velocity“ und das für einen Grammy nominierte „Star People Nation“ sowie „BLK2LIFE || A FUTURE PAST“, „Love Quantum“ und schließlich „Dream Manifest“. Als Musiker und Kollaborateur arbeitete er außerdem mit Künstlern wie J. Cole, Jill Scott, Wyclef Jean, Ari Lennox, Common und Dee Dee Bridgewater.

Auch live denkt Croker seine Musik gleichermaßen als Trompeter und Produzent: Akustische Instrumente treffen auf Beats, Samples und elektronische Klangbearbeitung, ohne dass die Improvisation dabei in den Hintergrund rückt. Für „Dream Manifest“ kommt er mit Tyler Bullock II an Piano und Keyboards, Eric Wheeler am Bass und Koleby Royston am Schlagzeug.

GRAMMY-nominated trumpeter, composer and producer Theo Croker has become one of the most distinctive voices of a generation for whom jazz, hip-hop, soul and electronic music are all part of the same musical language. With his latest project “Dream Manifest”, he continues along this path, combining the spontaneity of an acoustic jazz band with samples, electronic sounds and a production aesthetic deeply informed by hip-hop.

Croker comes from a remarkable musical lineage: his grandfather was trumpeter Doc Cheatham, who performed with artists including Cab Calloway, Teddy Wilson and Billie Holiday. Croker himself studied with Donald Byrd and was later championed by Dee Dee Bridgewater, who produced his 2014 album “Afro Physicist”. It was followed by “Escape Velocity” and the GRAMMY-nominated “Star People Nation”, as well as “BLK2LIFE || A FUTURE PAST”, “Love Quantum” and, most recently, “Dream Manifest”. On stage, Croker approaches his music as both a trumpeter and a producer: acoustic instrumentation meets beats, samples and electronic sound processing without sacrificing the spontaneity of improvisation. For “Dream Manifest”, he is joined by Tyler Bullock II on piano and keyboards, Eric Wheeler on bass and Koleby Royston on drums.
