SOMETHING ELSE! ist eine Soul-Jazz-Revue unter der Leitung von Vincent Herring, ein Septett mit wechselnder Besetzung, in dem, in Vincents Worten, „die besten Musiker auftreten, die großartigste Musik spielen und das auch sichtbar, was ansteckend seind wird“. Wenn das nicht mal Lust auf mehr macht! Selten hatten wir im ZigZag eine solche gesammelte Starpower auf einer Bühne: Neben Herring sind mit Jeremy Pelt, Wayne Escoffery, Paul Bollenback, Dave Kikoski, Essiet Essiet und Lewis Nash sechs Künstler der allerersten Riege versammelt, deren Namen sich alleine schon wie die Besetzung eines wegweisenden Albums lesen. Die Band spielt neue Arrangements von Klassikern des Soul-Jazz-Genres (denken Sie an Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons…) sowie Originalkompositionen im gleichen Stil. Vincent Herring ist ein Saxophonvirtuose mit einer einzigartigen und intensiven musikalischen Stimme und einer der wegweisendsten Saxophonisten der letzten Jahrzehnte. In den frühen 80er Jahren tourte er in Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten mit der Lionel Hampton Big Band und begann kurz danach ein 9 Jahre Engagement mit Nat Adderley. In weiterer Folge arbeitete er dann mit Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Hayes, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver Quintet, Jack DeJohnette’s Special Edition, The Mingus Big Band, Kenny Barron, Nancy Wilson und Dr. Billy Taylor. Als Gastsolist spielte er u. a. mit Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center und John Faddis mit der Carnegie Hall Big Band.

In den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten hat sich Freddie Hendrix zu einem der gefragtesten Trompeter im Jazz und darüber hinaus entwickelt. Auch als Komponist, Arrangeur und Pädagoge hat der in Teaneck, New Jersey, geborene Trompeter dank seiner Fähigkeiten und Vielseitigkeit mit einer Vielzahl von Künstlern zusammengearbeitet, die vom Count Basie Orchestra und der Christian McBride Big Band bis hin zu Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder und Alicia Keys reichen.

Wayne Escoffery ist einer der begabtesten Saxophonisten des amerikanischen Jazz. Wayne machte sich in der Mingus Dynasty Big Band einen Namen. Mehr als ein Jahrzehnt lang spielte er Tenor- und Sopransaxophon in der Band von Trompetenlegende Tom Harrell. Mit Jeremy Pelt und Jonathan Blake war er Mitbegründer der All-Star-Band Black Art Jazz Collective. Er hat Aufnahmen gemacht und ist mit einem Who's Who des Jazz aufgetreten, darunter Ron Carter, Abdullah Ibrahim, Eddie Henderson, Randy Brecker und Herbie Hancock. Wayne gewann einen Grammy mit der Mingus Big Band und führte die Downeat Critics Poll in den Kategorien Rising Star Tenor Saxophone und Rising Star Soprano Saxophone an.

David Kikoski ist einer der bekanntesten und geschätztesten New Yorker Pianisten. Seit Jahrzehnten überzeugt das Piano-Powerhouse als Live- und Studiospektakel Kritiker und Publikum gleichermaßen. Seine Karriere begann unter der Ägide seines Vaters und er spielte schon in Jugendjahren erste Auftritte, bevor er in den 80er Jahren in Berklee studierte, um dann mit 24 Jahren nach New York überzusiedeln um dort die Szene unsicher zu machen. Er spielte mit so gut wie jedem Musiker von Rang und Namen: Billy Hart, Randy Brecker, Bob Berg, Steps Ahead, Pat Martino und John Pattitucci sind hier exemplarisch zu nennen. Seine Aufnahmen als Leader machte er unter Anderem auf dem berüchtigten Label Criss-Cross Jazz.

Paul Bollenback ist ein amerikanischer Jazzgitarrist. Unter dem Eindruck der Musik von Miles Davis begann er sich mit dem Jazz auseinander zu setzen und gehört seit den späten 80er Jahren zu den gefragtesten Gitarristen der Welt. Er spielte mit Joey DeFrancesco, Stanley Turrentine, Gary Bartz, und vielen mehr, war an über 100 Aufnahmesessions beteiligt und wurde vielfach ausgezeichnet.

Essiet Essiet ist ein nigerianischstämmiger amerikanischer Bassist. 1982 kam sein künstlerischer Durchbruch, als er begann mit Abdullah Ibrahim zu arbeiten. 1988 wurde er dann Mitglied in einer der legendärsten Formationen des Jazz: Art Blay and the Jazz Messengers. Inzwischen ist er ohne Zweifel einer der renommiertesten Jazzbassisten überhaupt, spielte mit Benny Golson, Kenny Garrett, Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton, Jackie Mclean, Kenny Barron, Billy Higgins, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Kirkland, Danilo Perez und fast unendlich vielen anderen TopspielerInnen.

Joris Dudli ist ein schweizerischer Jazz-Schlagzeuger, der zu den erfolgreichsten seiner Zunft gezählt wird. Ab dem siebzehnten Lebensjahr arbeitete er als Studiomusiker und wurde später von 1979 bis 1985 festes Mitglied des Vienna Art Orchestra sowie des Art Farmer Quintets. Nach seinem Umzug in die USA spielte und nahm er mit vielen der größten Jazzmusiker der Welt auf: The Zawinul Syndicate, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Johnny Griffin, Mulgrew Miller, Clifford Jordan, Joe Lovano, Joe Henderson, Harold Mabern, Sonny Fortune und vielen weiteren mehr.

SOMETHING ELSE! is a soul-jazz revue under the direction of Vincent Herring, a septet with a changing line-up in which, in Vincent's words, “the best musicians playing great music and enjoying it thoroughly, which becomes infectious”. Rarely have we had such a collection of star power on one stage at ZigZag: in addition to Herring, Jeremy Pelt, Wayne Escoffery, Paul Bollenback, Dave Kikoski, Essiet Essiet and Lewis Nash are six artists of the very first rank, whose names alone read like the line-up of a groundbreaking album. The band plays new arrangements of classics of the soul-jazz genre (think Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons...) as well as original compositions in the same style. Vincent Herring is a saxophone virtuoso with a unique and intense musical voice and one of the most groundbreaking saxophonists of recent decades. Also an accomplished composer, arranger and educator, the Teaneck, New Jersey native's skill and versatility has resulted in him working with a wide array of performers that range from the Count Basie Orchestra and The Christian McBride Big Band, to Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.

Wayne Escoffery is one of the most talented saxophonists in American jazz. Wayne made a name for himself in the Mingus Dynasty Big Band. For more than a decade he played tenor and soprano saxophone in the band of trumpet legend Tom Harrell. He co-founded the all-star band Black Art Jazz Collective with Jeremy Pelt and Jonathan Blake. He has recorded and performed with a who's who of jazz, including Ron Carter, Abdullah Ibrahim, Eddie Henderson, Randy Brecker and Herbie Hancock. Wayne won a Grammy with the Mingus Big Band and topped the Downeat Critics Poll in the Rising Star Tenor Saxophone and Rising Star Soprano Saxophone categories.

David Kikoski is one of New York's best-known and most esteemed pianists. For decades, the piano powerhouse has won over critics and audiences alike as a live and studio spectacle. His career began under the aegis of his father and he played his first gigs in his teens before studying at Berklee in the 80s, then moving to New York at the age of 24 to make the scene unsafe. He played with just about every musician of note: Billy Hart, Randy Brecker, Bob Berg, Steps Ahead, Pat Martino and John Pattitucci are examples. His recordings as a leader were made on the notorious Criss-Cross Jazz label, among others.

Paul Bollenback is an American jazz guitarist. Influenced by the music of Miles Davis, he began to explore jazz and has been one of the most sought-after guitarists in the world since the late 1980s. He has played with Joey DeFrancesco, Stanley Turrentine, Gary Bartz and many more, has been involved in over 100 recording sessions and has received numerous awards.

Essiet Essiet is an American bassist of Nigerian descent. His artistic breakthrough came in 1982 when he began working with Abdullah Ibrahim. In 1988 he became a member of one of the most legendary formations in jazz: Art Blay and the Jazz Messengers. Since then he has undoubtedly become one of the most renowned jazz bassists of all time, playing with Benny Golson, Kenny Garrett, Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton, Jackie Mclean, Kenny Barron, Billy Higgins, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Kirkland, Danilo Perez and an almost infinite number of other top players.

Joris Dudli is a Swiss jazz drummer who is counted among the most successful of his guild. From the age of seventeen he worked as a studio musician and later became a permanent member of the Vienna Art Orchestra from 1979 to 1985, as well as the Art Farmer Quintet. After moving to the United States, he played and recorded with many of the world's greatest jazz musicians: The Zawinul Syndicate, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Johnny Griffin, Mulgrew Miller, Clifford Jordan, Joe Lovano, Joe Henderson, Harold Mabern, Sonny Fortune and many more.
