INDRA ist ein Klaviertrio aus Barreiro, Portugal und gehört dort zu den interessantesten Formationen der aktuellen Jazzwelt. Vergangenen Sommer lud sich das Trio den renommierten deutschen Jazzsaxophonisten Uli Kempendorff ein; veröffentlicht werden die spannenden Aufnahmen mit Musik zwischen lyrischem Modern Jazz und portugiesischer Folklore im Juni 2025 beim Schweizer Label Unit Records. Für den Bassisten João Custodio spielt bei den Konzerten in Deutschland die preisgekrönte junge Kölner Bassistin Ursula Wienken mit ihrem ZigZag-Debut!

Uli Kempendorff studierte an der HfM »Hanns Eisler« Berlin und in New York am City College Saxophon und Improvisation. Kempendorffs Arbeit ist auf gut zwei Dutzend CDs, Schallplatten und Rundfunkmitschnitten dokumentiert, bei Labels wie WhyPlayJazz, ECM, Enja/Yellowbird oder Four Music. Darunter befinden sich fünf eigene Produktionen mit »Field« und Yellow Bird. Neben seinen eigenen Projekten »Field« (seit 2018 mit Christopher Dell, Peter Bruun und Jonas Westergaard) und »Yellow Bird« (eine Modern-Roots-Band mit ehemals Lucia Cadotsch, Manon Kahle und Ronny Graupe) ist und war Uli Kempendorff aktiv in Gruppen mit u.a. Benjamin Weidekamp, Julia Hülsmann, Felix Henkelhausen, Tobias Delius, Rudi Mahall, Wanja Slavin, Markus Pesonen, Janning Trumann, Pablo Held, Mike Pride, Christian Weber; er spielte mit SEEED, Rolf Kühn, ‪Jimi Tenor und 'Little' Jimmy Scott. Kempendorff erhielt mehrere Projekt-, Studio-, und Kompositionsstipendien des Berliner Senats und 2006/07 als DAAD-Jahres-Stipendiat in New York City.

Luís Barrigas (Klavier), geboren in Setúbal, studierte Klassik und Jazz u. a. am Setúbal-Konservatorium, an der Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa sowie am Hot Clube de Portugal bei Lehrern wie Mário Laginha und Filipe Melo. Er arbeitete mit Künstlern wie Perico Sambeat, Nelson Cascais, Bruno Pedroso, Demian Cabaud, Beatriz Nunes und Vitorino. Mit seinem Trio gewann er 2010 den Luiz-Villas-Boas-Preis beim Cascais CoolJazz Festival. Seine Alben Songs with and without words (2016) und Indra (2019) erhielten begeisterte Kritiken. Barrigas ist sowohl als Solist wie auch als vielseitiger Sideman gefragt.

Ursula Wienken ist eine deutsch-polnische Bassistin, Komponistin und Bandleaderin mit Wohnsitz in Köln und Barcelona. Auf E-Bass und Kontrabass ist sie hauptsächlich als Sidewoman in zahlreichen Projekten zwischen Deutschland, Spanien und der Schweiz aktiv, tritt jedoch auch mit ihren eigenen Bands in Erscheinung. Ihr Musikstudium begann sie 2020 an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln und stand seither auf renommierten Bühnen und Festivals (u. a. North Sea Jazz Festival, FUSION Festival, Jazzfest Bonn, Summerklaeng Festival Köln,. Konzertreisen führten sie nach Ecuador, Großbritannien, Spanien, Polen, Österreich, Norwegen, in die Niederlande und die Schweiz. 2023/2024 war sie außerdem Bassistin im Bundesjazzorchester. Für ihr Schaffen als Komponistin und Musikerin wurde sie unter anderem mit dem Kunstförderpreis der Stadt Neuss (2022) und dem Jungen Münchener Jazzpreis (2023) ausgezeichnet.

Jorge Moniz (Schlagzeug) stammt aus Barreiro und erhielt seine musikalische Ausbildung am Nationalkonservatorium in Lissabon sowie am Hot Clube de Portugal. Er studierte Komposition und Ethnomusikologie und promovierte in Kunstwissenschaft über Musik im Film. Moniz ist ein zentraler Akteur der portugiesischen Jazzszene und spielte mit Carlos Barretto, Júlio Resende, Luís Figueiredo und Mário Delgado. Als Bandleader veröffentlichte er drei Alben, zuletzt Cinematheque (2021). Er ist festes Mitglied im Trio Indra und im Quartett der Sängerin Beatriz Nunes. Darüber hinaus komponiert er für Theater, Tanz und Film, u. a. für Clear Nights von Paulo Filipe Monteiro.

INDRA is a piano trio from Barreiro, Portugal, and is considered one of the most exciting formations in the current jazz scene there. Last summer, the trio invited renowned German jazz saxophonist Uli Kempendorff to join them; the captivating recordings—featuring music that blends lyrical modern jazz with elements of Portuguese folklore—will be released in June 2025 on the Swiss label Unit Records. For the concerts in Germany, award-winning young Cologne-based bassist Ursula Wienken will step in for João Custodio, marking her debut at ZigZag!

Uli Kempendorff studied saxophone and improvisation at the HfM "Hanns Eisler" Berlin and in New York at City College. His albums Songs with and without words (2016) and Indra (2019) received critical acclaim. A versatile soloist and sideman, Barrigas is a respected voice in Portuguese jazz.

Ursula Wienken is a German-Polish bassist, composer, and bandleader based in Cologne and Barcelona. On both electric bass and double bass, she primarily performs as a sidewoman in numerous projects between Germany, Spain and Switzerland, while also leading her own projects. She began her music studies in 2020 at the Cologne Hochschule für Musik und Tanz and has since performed on renowned stages and festivals (including North Sea Jazz Festival, FUSION Festival, Jazzfest Bonn, Summerklaeng Festival Cologne, SATROCKS Festival Lausanne, among others). Tours and concerts have taken her to Ecuador, the United Kingdom, Spain, Poland, Austria, Norway, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and large parts of Germany. She has also been the bassist in German Jazz Youth Orchestra. For her work as a composer and musician, she has been honored with awards such as the Neuss Art Promotion Prize (2022) and the Junger Münchener Jazzpreis (2023).

Jorge Moniz (drums), from Barreiro, studied piano and drums in Lisbon, including at the National Conservatory and the Hot Clube de Portugal. He holds degrees in Composition, Ethnomusicology, and a PhD in Arts focusing on music in cinema. A key figure in the Portuguese jazz scene, he has played with artists like Carlos Barretto, Júlio Resende, Luís Figueiredo, and Mário Delgado. He has released three albums as a leader, most recently Cinematheque (2021), and is a member of the Indra trio and Beatriz Nunes’ quartet. He also composes for theatre, dance, and film, including the feature Clear Nights.
