Zum 100. Geburtstag von John Coltrane kommen fünf der herausragenden Musiker des heutigen Jazz für ein außergewöhnliches All-Star-Projekt zusammen. Mit Joe Lovano, Melissa Aldana, Nduduzo Makhathini, Linda May Han Oh und Jeff “Tain” Watts stehen fünf international gefeierte Solisten und Bandleader gemeinsam auf der Bühne – eine Besetzung, die selbst für ein Projekt dieser Größenordnung außergewöhnlich ist.
„Coltrane 100: Both Directions at Once“ versteht sich dabei nicht als historische Rekonstruktion. Coltranes Musik wird zum Ausgangspunkt für fünf Musiker unterschiedlicher Generationen und musikalischer Hintergründe, die sein Vermächtnis aus heutiger Perspektive weiterdenken. Auf dem Programm stehen Neuinterpretationen aus verschiedenen Phasen seines Schaffens ebenso wie eigene, von Coltrane inspirierte Kompositionen. Ein Gipfeltreffen fünf außergewöhnlicher Musiker zu Ehren eines der größten und einflussreichsten Improvisatoren der Musikgeschichte!

Joe Lovano gehört seit mehr als vier Jahrzehnten zu den bedeutendsten Saxofonisten des modernen Jazz. Der Grammy-Preisträger spielte unter anderem mit Elvin Jones, Paul Motian, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock und Dave Holland. Über viele Jahre gehörte er zu Paul Motians legendärem Trio mit Bill Frisell und leitete zahlreiche eigene Formationen. Nach mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten bei Blue Note veröffentlicht Lovano heute bei ECM und zählt zu den einflussreichsten Tenorsaxofonisten seiner Generation.
Die Grammy-nominierte Saxofonistin Melissa Aldana wurde in Santiago de Chile geboren und wuchs in einer musikalischen Familie auf. Sowohl ihr Vater als auch ihr Großvater waren Saxofonisten; bereits mit sechs Jahren begann sie unter Anleitung ihres Vaters Marcos mit dem Instrument. Als Teenager trat sie in den Jazzclubs Santiagos auf und wurde von Danilo Pérez zum Panama Jazz Festival eingeladen. Nach ihrem Studium am Berklee College of Music gewann sie 2013 als erste weibliche Instrumentalistin und erste südamerikanische Musikerin die Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Seit 2022 veröffentlicht sie als Bandleaderin bei Blue Note Records.
Der südafrikanische Pianist und Komponist Nduduzo Makhathini wuchs in der Hügellandschaft von umGungundlovu auf, wo Musik und rituelle Praktiken eng miteinander verbunden sind. Makhathini greift auf die Tradition südafrikanischer Jazzgrößen wie Bheki Mseleku, Moses Molelekwa und Abdullah Ibrahim zurück und verbindet sie mit Einflüssen von John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner und Randy Weston. Er spielte unter anderem mit Wynton Marsalis, Richard Bona und der WDR Big Band. 2017 erhielt er den All Africa Music Award als bester afrikanischer Jazzmusiker; seit 2020 veröffentlicht er als Bandleader bei Blue Note Records.
Die in Malaysia geborene und in Australien aufgewachsene Bassistin und Komponistin Linda May Han Oh zählt zu den einflussreichsten Musikerinnen ihrer Generation. Von New York aus etablierte sie sich an der Weltspitze des modernen Jazz und arbeitete unter anderem mit Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Vijay Iyer, Kenny Barron, Steve Coleman, Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington und Dave Douglas. Neben ihrer Arbeit als eine der gefragtesten Bassistinnen der internationalen Szene veröffentlichte sie zahlreiche eigene Alben und entwickelte eine unverwechselbare musikalische Sprache als Komponistin und Bandleaderin.
Jeff “Tain” Watts ist einer der größten lebenden Jazzschlagzeuger. Bekannt wurde er zunächst als Mitglied von Wynton Marsalis’ Band, anschließend prägte er über viele Jahre das Quartett von Branford Marsalis. Sein kraftvolles und unverwechselbares Spiel hat Generationen jüngerer Schlagzeuger beeinflusst. Zu seinen zahlreichen musikalischen Partnern gehören McCoy Tyner, George Benson, Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, Betty Carter, Alice Coltrane und Ravi Coltrane. Daneben veröffentlichte Watts zahlreiche Alben als Bandleader und Komponist.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth, five of today’s outstanding jazz musicians come together for an extraordinary all-star project. “Coltrane 100: Both Directions at Once” is not conceived as a historical reconstruction. Coltrane’s music serves as the starting point for five musicians from different generations and musical backgrounds to explore his legacy from a contemporary perspective. The programme combines new interpretations of music from different periods of his career with original compositions inspired by Coltrane. A summit meeting of five extraordinary musicians celebrating one of the greatest and most influential improvisers in the history of music!

Joe Lovano has been one of the most important saxophonists in modern jazz for more than four decades. The Grammy Award winner has performed with artists including Elvin Jones, Paul Motian, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock and Dave Holland. For many years, he was part of Paul Motian’s legendary trio with Bill Frisell and has led numerous groups of his own. After more than two decades recording for Blue Note, Lovano now records for ECM and remains one of the most influential tenor saxophonists of his generation.
Grammy-nominated saxophonist Melissa Aldana was born in Santiago, Chile, and grew up in a musical family. Both her father and grandfather were saxophonists, and she began playing the instrument at the age of six under the guidance of her father Marcos. As a teenager, she performed in jazz clubs in Santiago and was invited by Danilo Pérez to appear at the Panama Jazz Festival. Jeff “Tain” Watts is one of the greatest living jazz drummers. He first became widely known as a member of Wynton Marsalis’ band and subsequently helped define the sound of Branford Marsalis’ quartet for many years. His powerful and unmistakable playing has influenced generations of younger drummers. His numerous collaborators include McCoy Tyner, George Benson, Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, Betty Carter, Alice Coltrane and Ravi Coltrane. Watts has also released numerous albums as a bandleader and composer.
