Spätestens seit seinem mit dem Edison Award ausgezeichneten Blue-Note-Debüt »KingMaker« (2019) gilt Joel Ross als einer der markantesten und mutigsten Vibraphonisten seiner Generation. Ross’ neuestes Album »Gospel Music« schöpft aus den spirituellen und gemeinschaftlichen Traditionen der Black Church in Chicago und erforscht Ideen von Engagement, Erneuerung und gemeinsamer Zielsetzung durch vielschichtige Harmonien und kollaborative Improvisation. Mit seinem Ensemble Good Vibes schafft Ross Musik, die sowohl technisch anspruchsvoll als auch emotional direkt ist.

Joel Ross ist wohl der aufregendste junge Vibraphonist der Jazzwelt. Der 1995 geborene US-Amerikaner wurde schon in jungen Jahren von Jazzgrößen wie Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper und seinem Mentor Stefon Harris gefördert und machte sich schnell einen Namen. Kurz nach seinem Abschluss wurde er Mitglied der Band von Marquis Hill, was der Startpunkt für seinen Aufstieg zur Spitze der Szene wurde. Er arbeitete Walter Smith III, Gil Scott-Heron, Ulysses Owens und Altergenossen wie Immanuel Wilkins zusammen, nahm bereits mehrere Platten als Leader für Blue Note auf und wurde mehrfach vom legendären Down Beat Magazine als bester Vibraphonist ausgezeichnet.

Since his Edison Award-winning Blue Note debut KingMaker (2019), Joel Ross has been regarded as one of the most distinctive and daring vibraphonists of his generation. His latest album Gospel Music draws from the spiritual and communal traditions of Chicago’s Black Church, exploring ideas of devotion, renewal, and collective purpose through layered harmonies and collaborative improvisation. With his ensemble Good Vibes, Ross creates music that is both technically refined and emotionally immediate.

Joel Ross is arguably the most exciting young vibraphonist on today’s jazz scene. Born in 1995 in the United States, he was supported early on by jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper, and his mentor Stefon Harris, quickly establishing a strong reputation. Shortly after graduating, he joined the band of Marquis Hill — a key stepping stone in his rapid rise within the scene. He has worked with Walter Smith III, Gil Scott-Heron, Ulysses Owens, and contemporaries like Immanuel Wilkins, has released several albums as a leader on Blue Note, and has been named Best Vibraphonist multiple times by the legendary DownBeat magazine.
