Das Benjamin Lackner Quintet vereint fünf eigenständige Stimmen der europäischen Jazzszene, mit Maciej Obara und Mathias Eick als prägende Kräfte an der Frontline. Geleitet vom deutschen Pianisten und Komponisten Benjamin Lackner, wurzelt das Quintett in einer starken melodischen Handschrift, fein nuancierter Ensemble-Interaktion sowie einer gemeinsamen Sensibilität für Raum, Klangfarbe und erzählerischen Verlauf. Das ECM-Record-Release-Konzert 2025 schwingt uns noch in den Ohren nach, umso mehr freut es uns ihnen diese fantastische Band ein weiteres mal in unserem Club präsentieren zu dürfen.

Benjamin ‘Benny’ Lackner ist ein deutsch-amerikanischer Jazzmusiker (Klavier, Keyboards, Komposition). Lackner wuchs in Berlin und Kalifornien auf, wo er am California Institute of Arts studierte; darauf folgte Unterricht bei seinem “Mentor” Brad Mehldau. Mit 30 Jahren kehrte er zurück nach Berlin. Mit seinem seit 2002 bestehenden Trio und weiteren Formationen spielte er mehrere Alben ein und hat überall auf der Welt auf großen Festival wie dem Montreux Jazz Festival performt. Seit 2022 sind seine Alben Teil des Katalogs von ECM.

Mathias Eick ist ein norwegischer Jazztrompeter und Multiinstrumentalist. Neben der Trompete, welche sein Hauptinstrument ist, spielt er Kontrabass, Vibraphon, Piano und Gitarre. Er arbeitete im Bereich des Jazz unter anderem mit Mike Stern, Lars Danielsson, Manu Katché und vielen mehr zusammen und ist ebenfalls seit 2008 Teil der ECM-Familie.

Maciej Obara ist ein polnischer Jazzmusiker (Saxophone, Komposition). Er gewann mit seinem Spiel zahlreiche Jazzwettbewerbe, wie den Bielska Zadymka und den BMW Welt Jazz Award. Seine Arbeite führte zu Arbeiten mit Tomasz Stanko, Nasheet Waits, Rudi Mahall und Ralph Alessi.

Paul Kleber wurde in Berlin geboren und begann schon als Kind Cello und Schlagzeug zu spielen, bevor er sich für sein Hauptinstrument, den Kontrabass entschied. Er studierte klassischen Kontrabass an der Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" Berlin und Jazz, ebenfalls an der Universität der Künste Berlin. Er spielte und nahm mit Jazzanova, Sebastian Studnitzky, der britischen Band Fink, Micatone, Nylon, JazzIndeed und Lisa Bassenge auf.

Matthieu Chazarenc wurde 1977 in Agen im Südwesten von Frankreich geboren. Von 1990 bis 1995 studierte er klassisches Schlagzeug am Conservatoire de Pau, und dann im Jahr 1996 beim CMCN (Music Center und Nancy Kreativ) fortzufahren. Zur Zeit wohnhaft in Paris, führt Matthieu Chazarenc regelmäßig auf Festivals und Jazz-Clubs in Frankreich, sondern auch in Europa. Er gehört zu den besten zeitgenössischen Schlagzeugern Europas und spielte unter anderem mit: Robert Glasper, Tigran Hamasyan, Mark Turner, Antonio Fárao, Rosario Giuliani, Dominique di Piazza und vielen mehr.

The Benjamin Lackner Quintet brings together five distinctive voices from the European jazz scene, with Maciej Obara and Mathias Eick as defining forces on the frontline. Led by German pianist and composer Benjamin Lackner, the quintet is rooted in a strong melodic language, finely nuanced ensemble interaction, and a shared sensitivity for space, tone color, and narrative flow. The memory of their ECM Records album release concert in 2025 is still ringing in our ears, which makes us all the more delighted to welcome this fantastic band back to our club once again.

Benjamin ‘Benny’ Lackner is a German-American jazz musician (piano, keyboards, composition). He grew up in Berlin and California, where he studied at the California Institute of the Arts and received mentorship from Brad Mehldau. At the age of 30, he returned to Berlin. Mathias Eick is a Norwegian jazz trumpeter and multi-instrumentalist. While the trumpet is his primary instrument, he also plays double bass, vibraphone, piano, and guitar. Eick has collaborated with numerous jazz greats, including Mike Stern, Lars Danielsson, and Manu Katché. Since 2008, he has also been a part of the ECM label family.

Maciej Obara is a Polish jazz musician (saxophone, composition). He has won numerous jazz competitions, including the Bielska Zadymka and the BMW Welt Jazz Award. His artistry has led to collaborations with renowned musicians such as Tomasz Stańko, Nasheet Waits, Rudi Mahall, and Ralph Alessi.

Paul Kleber was born in Berlin and started playing cello and drums as a young kid, before he chose his main instrument, the double bass. He studied classical double bass at the Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ Berlin and jazz, too at the Universität der Künste Berlin. He played and recorded with Jazzanova, Sebastian Studnitzky, British band Fink, Micatone, Nylon, JazzIndeed and Lisa Bassenge.

Matthieu Chazarenc, born in 1977 in Agen, southwestern France, began studying classical percussion at the Conservatoire de Pau in 1990. In 1996, he continued his training at the CMCN (Centre Musical et Créatif de Nancy). Now based in Paris, Chazarenc is considered one of Europe’s finest contemporary drummers. Performing regularly at festivals and jazz clubs across France and Europe, he has collaborated with artists such as Robert Glasper, Tigran Hamasyan, Mark Turner, Antonio Fárao, Rosario Giuliani, and Dominique di Piazza.
