Aufgewachsen ist Niklas Lukassen in einem unscheinbaren Schwarzwalddorf, jedoch etabliert er sich mit malerischem Sinn für instrumentale Lyrik gleichermaßen auf dem Kontrabass, der Bassgitarre und einem einzigartigen Cello in den Worten von Jazzwise als ein “vielseitiger Bassvirtuose” und “future jazz star” in der internationalen Jazzszene. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus New York lebt er heute zwischen London und Berlin.

Mit seinem Album Still Waters auf Kurt Rosenwinkel’s Heartcore Records taucht Niklas Lukassen ein in eine facettenreiche Klangwelt, welche von seinen Talenten als Komponist, Bassist und Sänger (Luna) getragen wird.

Niklas Lukassen's renommiertes Quartet vereint an diesem besondern Abend im Zig Zag ein Starensemble aus fesselnden Individualisten der Szenen von New York, der UK und Deutschlands zu einem formwandelnden, synergetischen Element. Wie Wasser bahnt sich das Ensemble in fliessenden Improvisationen einen Weg durch vielschichtige Gefilde. Dabei lässt es bei bewusst gewagter Kollision gewaltige Wellen aufschlagen. Weit unter der Oberfläche ergründet diese Formation in vermeintlich stillen Gewässern ungeahnte Tiefen.

Mit 16 entschied sich Niklas Lukassen nach Berlin zu ziehen, um am Jazz Institut zu lernen und in die Szene der Hauptstadt einzutauchen. In New York schloss Niklas sein Masterstudium mit vollem Stipendium an der Manhattan School of Music unter seinem Mentor Ron Carter ab. Als Doktorand an der Royal Academy of Music in London forscht er heute an einer Spektrumserweiterung durch unorthodoxe Bassspielweisen. Mit natürlicher spielerischer Autorität und emphatischer Experimentierfreude beheimatet sich Niklas in mehreren musikalischen Welten. So begleitete er Auftritte mit u.a. Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mike Stern, Jorge Rossy, Norma Winstone, Jo Lawry, Will Vinson und den New York Voices. Darüber hinaus war er übrigens auch Sänger des Bundesjazzorchesters. Zuletzt wurde das Kenny Wheeler Legacy Project, welches Niklas Lukassen in den Abbey Studios als Bassist einspielte, für den Grammy Award nominiert.

Der ursprünglich aus London stammende Altsaxophonist und Komponist Will Vinson zog 1999 nach New York City und ist seitdem dort nicht mehr wegzudenken. Seit seiner Ankunft ist er mit Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ari Hoenig, Marcus Gilmore, Chris Potter, Kurt Elling, Lage Lund, Aaron Parks und vielen anderen aufgetreten und/oder hat Aufnahmen gemacht. Will ist Mitglied einer Reihe führender Ensembles, darunter das Quartett des Pianisten Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ari Hoenigs Punk Bop und Nonet, Miguel Zenons Identities Orchestra und seine eigenen Gruppen, in denen neben oben genannten Musikern unter anderem auch noch Shai Maestro und Mike Moreno mitwirken. Will ist mehrfach Grammy-nominiert und hat auf den führenden modernen Jazzlabels wie Criss Cross Records Platten aufgenommen.

Tom Cawley ist einer der renommiertesten Jazzpianisten Großbritanniens. Er ist weltweit in großen Clubs, und Festivals aufgetreten und hat mit einigen der führenden Künstler seines Landes und darüber hinaus gespielt, allen voran mit Peter Gabriel, mit dem er auch zwei Alben und eine Live-DVD aufgenommen hat und Schlagzeug und Keyboard Ikone Gary Husband. Als Jazzpianist leitet Tom regelmäßig die Hausband im Ronnie Scott's Club und ist außerdem Professor für Jazzpiano an der Royal Academy of Music.

Fabian Arends ist einer von Deutschland’s führenden Jazz Drummern. Der Wahlkölner spielte weltweit Konzerte unter anderem mit Musikern wie Lee Konitz, Marc Copland, Thomas Morgan, Hayden Chisholm, Simon Nabatov, Anna Webber, Hubert Nuss, Dieter Manderscheid, Pablo Held, Robert Landfermann, Nils Wogram, Thomas Rückert, Philip Zoubek, Jacob Anderskov und vielen Weiteren. Er ist ebenfalls Komponist und unterrichtet Schlagzeug and der Musikhochschule in Stuttgart.

Raised in an unassuming village in Germany’s Black Forest, Niklas Lukassen has established himself on the double bass, electric bass, and a unique cello with a painterly sense for instrumental lyricism. Described by Jazzwise as a “versatile bass virtuoso” and a “future jazz star,” he has quickly become a distinctive voice on the international jazz scene. After returning from New York, he now lives and works between London and Berlin.

With his album Still Waters on Heartcore Records, founded by Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lukassen dives into a richly layered sonic world shaped by his talents as a composer, bassist, and vocalist (Luna).

On this special evening at the Zig Zag, Niklas Lukassen’s renowned quartet brings together a stellar ensemble of compelling individualists from the jazz scenes of New York, the UK, and Germany. In flowing improvisations, the group moves like water through complex musical landscapes. Through daring collisions, powerful waves arise, while beneath the surface the ensemble explores unexpected depths in seemingly still waters.

At the age of 16, Lukassen moved to Berlin to study at the Jazz-Institut Berlin and immerse himself in the capital’s jazz scene. In New York, he completed his master’s degree on a full scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music under the mentorship of legendary bassist Ron Carter. Today, as a doctoral researcher at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he explores ways to expand the instrument’s sonic spectrum through unconventional bass techniques. With natural authority and an empathetic spirit of experimentation, Lukassen moves comfortably between multiple musical worlds. He has performed alongside artists including Mike Stern, Jorge Rossy, Norma Winstone, Jo Lawry, Will Vinson, and The New York Voices. He was also a vocalist with the Bundesjazzorchester. Most recently, the Kenny Wheeler Legacy Project, recorded with Lukassen on bass at Abbey Road Studios, was nominated for a Grammy Awards.

Tom Cawley is one of the UK’s most renowned jazz pianists. He has performed worldwide in major clubs and festivals and has collaborated with many of the leading artists of his country and beyond—most notably Peter Gabriel, with whom he recorded two albums and a live DVD, as well as drummer and keyboard virtuoso Gary Husband. As a jazz pianist, Cawley regularly leads the house band at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and is also Professor of Jazz Piano at the Royal Academy of Music.

In addition to his work as a performer and composer, he teaches drums at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart.
