Nur wenige Musikerinnen und Musiker im Jazz haben einen derart rasanten Aufstieg erlebt wie Samara Joy – und das in so jungen Jahren. Mit gerade einmal 26 Jahren ist ihre bisherige Karriere schlicht sensationell: Sechs Grammy Awards, darunter als Best New Artist, sowie ein NAACP Image Award stehen bereits zu Buche. Joy hat damit eine öffentliche Bekanntheit erreicht, die Jazzmusikerinnen und Jazzmusikern nur äußerst selten zuteilwird. Regelmäßige Auftritte im amerikanischen Fernsehen und ihre enorme Reichweite insbesondere bei einem jungen Publikum haben dazu beigetragen, klassische amerikanische Musik einer neuen Generation näherzubringen. Ihre Konzertliste umfasst das Newport Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival und Montreal International Jazz Festival ebenso wie das Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, Village Vanguard und Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Auch von der Kritik wurde ihr Aufstieg begeistert begleitet. DownBeat bezeichnete sie anlässlich ihres Verve-Debüts „Linger Awhile“ als „silky-voiced star“, NPR als eine „classic jazz singer from a new generation“. Als Interpretin von Jazzstandards wird sie immer wieder in eine Reihe mit Sängerinnen wie Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln und Carmen McRae gestellt.

Samara Joy stammt aus dem New Yorker Stadtteil Castle Hill in der Bronx und wuchs in einer musikalischen Familie auf. Ihre Großeltern leiteten die Gospelgruppe The Savettes, ihr Vater, der Musiker und Songwriter Antonio McLendon, tourte mit Andraé Crouch. Joy selbst sang zunächst im Gospelchor ihrer Kirche und beschäftigte sich intensiv mit klassischem R&B, bevor sie während ihrer Schulzeit zum Jazz fand. Bei Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington wurde sie als Best Vocalist ausgezeichnet. Anschließend studierte sie Jazz am SUNY Purchase und gewann noch während ihres Studiums 2019 die Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition – der entscheidende Ausgangspunkt ihrer professionellen Karriere.

2021 erschien ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum beim Label Whirlwind. Mit „Linger Awhile“ folgte 2022 ihr Durchbruch bei Verve Records. Das Album brachte ihr die Grammys als Best New Artist und Best Jazz Vocal Album ein und führte zu Auftritten in großen amerikanischen Fernsehsendungen wie „The Tonight Show“, „The Late Show“ und „Today“. Ende 2023 veröffentlichte sie die gemeinsam mit Mitgliedern ihrer musikalischen Familie aufgenommene EP „A Joyful Holiday“, die 2025 zwei weitere Grammys erhielt.

2024 folgte „Portrait“, das Joy gemeinsam mit dem Grammy-prämierten Trompeter Brian Lynch produzierte. Das Album dokumentiert ihre Entwicklung als Musikerin und Bandleaderin und die enge Verbindung zu ihrer Tourband. Neben neu interpretierten Standards enthält es eigene Texte und Kompositionen, darunter „Reincarnation of a Lovebird (Pursuit of a Dream)“ auf Grundlage einer Komposition von Charles Mingus. „Portrait“ erhielt 2025 den NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album und brachte Joy 2026 ihren inzwischen sechsten Grammy ein – erneut als Best Jazz Vocal Album.

Her regular appearances on American television and remarkable popularity with younger audiences have helped introduce timeless American music to a new generation. Her performance history includes the Newport Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival and Montreal International Jazz Festival, as well as iconic stages including the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, Village Vanguard and Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Samara Joy grew up in the Castle Hill neighborhood of the Bronx in a deeply musical family. Her grandparents led the Philadelphia gospel group The Savettes, while her father, musician and songwriter Antonio McLendon, toured with Andraé Crouch. Joy sang in her church’s gospel choir and was captivated by classic R&B before discovering jazz during her high-school years. She was named Best Vocalist at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s prestigious Essentially Ellington program and later studied jazz at SUNY Purchase. While still in college, she won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, a victory that marked the beginning of her professional career.

In 2021, Joy released her self-titled debut album on Whirlwind Records. Her breakthrough Verve album “Linger Awhile” followed in 2022, earning her Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album and leading to appearances on major American television programs including “The Tonight Show”, “The Late Show” and “Today”. In late 2023, she released “A Joyful Holiday”, recorded with members of her musical family, which earned two further Grammy Awards in 2025.

In 2024, Joy released “Portrait”, co-produced with Grammy-winning trumpeter Brian Lynch. The album reflects her development as a musician and bandleader and the close relationship she has developed with her touring band. Alongside reimagined standards, it features her own lyrical compositions, including “Reincarnation of a Lovebird (Pursuit of a Dream)”, built around a composition by Charles Mingus. “Portrait” received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album in 2025 and earned Joy her sixth Grammy Award in 2026, once again for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
