Mit “A Tribute to John Coltrane” widmen sich Ben Kraef, Omri Abramov & Uri Gincel mit einer fantastisch besetzten Band mit den besten Musikern, die die Hauptstadt zu bieten hat den Kompositionen und dem Oeuvre des wohl größten Tenorsaxophonisten der Jazzgeschichte. Es besteht aus einigen der talentiertesten und gefragtesten Musiker der heutigen Jazzszene. Wie kein Zweiter erweiterte Coltrane das Jazzvokabular und dessen Denkwelt und prägt die Musikwelt bis heute. Feiern Sie gemeinsam mit uns John Coltrane!

Omri Abramov ist ein israelischer Saxophonist. Er ist Co-Leader der Jazz-Fusion-Band 'Niogi' und leitet sein eigenes Trio in NYC. Geboren 1989 in Jerusalem, begann Abramov seine Saxophonausbildung im Alter von 13 Jahren und setzte im Alter von 18 Jahren einen Fuß in die professionelle Welt des Jazz. Bis zum Jahr 2011 spielte Abramov mehrmals mit verschiedenen Gruppen auf einigen der führenden israelischen Jazzfestivals. Sein musikalisches Portfolio umfasst Kollaborationen mit Odean Pope, Ester Rada, Pete Lockett, Roland Guerin, Shai Maestro, Per Mathisen, Marina Maximilian, Heinrich von Kalnein und mehr.

Tobias Backhaus wurde am 8. Januar 1984 in Darmstadt, Deutschland, geboren. Er begann im Alter von 5 Jahren mit dem Schlagzeugspiel und studierte anschließend bei Jazzmeistern wie Keith Copeland, Ari Hoenig, Jim Black, John Hollenbeck und Jeff Ballard. Er hat einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Jazz-Performance vom Jazz-Institut Berlin. Sein individueller Ansatz und seine stilistische Vielfalt - von traditionellem Jazz über freie Improvisation bis hin zu moderner klassischer Musik und darüber hinaus - sowie seine Fähigkeit, sich mühelos zwischen diesen verschiedenen Welten zu bewegen, haben ihn zu einem der gefragtesten jungen Schlagzeuger der deutschen Jazzszene gemacht. Tobias hat mit Künstlern wie Torsten de Winkel, Till Brönner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tony Lakatos, Carlos Bica, Jiggs Whigham, Gwilym Simcock, Peter Weniger, Frank Chastenier und Ack van Rooyen, den Dresdner Symphonikern, der NDR Big Band, dem Berlin Jazz Orchestra und vielen anderen zusammengearbeitet.

“A Tribute to John Coltrane” brings together Ben Kraef, Omri Abramov & Uri Gincel along with a stellar band featuring some of the finest musicians Berlin has to offer, to honor the compositions and legacy of arguably the greatest tenor saxophonist in jazz history. The lineup consists of some of the most talented and in-demand players on today’s jazz scene. No other artist expanded the jazz vocabulary and conceptual landscape quite like Coltrane, and his influence continues to shape the music world to this day. Uri Gincel is one of the most sought-after and respected jazz pianists in Berlin. Gincel's style is strongly rooted in tradition, but he knows how to bring jazz into the modern age. His playing is dynamic, lyrical and above all full of energy and power! Born in Tel Aviv, Gincel came to Berlin in 2009 and quickly became an influential part of the jazz scene. Uri toured the world with many projects, including the "Uri Gincel Trio" and "Bonaparte", and studied with eminent musicians such as Arnie Lawrence and Walter Blending Jr. For years it has been impossible to imagine the Berlin scene without him, and as host of the Tuesday session at ZigZag he has created a true institution in the cultural life of the Spree.Ben Kraef is a German-Montenegrin saxophonist and composer based in Berlin. Ben graduated from the University of Music “Hanns Eisler”, Berlin. In 2007 he relocated to New York City on a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and obtained a Master of Arts from The City College of New York in 2009. In the past years Ben has won international acclaim in form of several prizes and awards, among these most notably the Biberacher Jazzpreis (2006), the “Concours International de Jazz de Fribourg” (2007), the Yamaha Saxophone Contest (2007), and the Billie Stoller Scholarship to an outstanding scholar and musician from The City College of New York (2008). Ben’s activities as a performer have included his membership in the renowned National German Youth Big Band (BuJazzO), where he was part of the concert line-up for a total of three years. He has had the chance to perform throughout Europe, the Middle East, as well as southern Africa and Japan.

Ben Kraef is a German-Montenegrin saxophonist and composer based in Berlin. Ben graduated from the University of Music “Hanns Eisler”, Berlin and obtained a Master of Arts from The City College of New York in 2009 where he was also awarded the Billie Stoller Scholarship to an outstanding scholar and musician in 2008. The list of internationally renowned musicians Ben has been performing and recording with includes luminaries Lalo Schifrin, Fred Hersch, Pee Wee Ellis and Till Brönner as well as pop groups such as „Wir Sind Helden” and the radio big bands of HR and WDR.

Omri Abramov is an Israeli saxophonist. He is co-leader of the jazz fusion band 'Niogi' and leads his own trio in NYC. Born in Jerusalem in 1989, Abramov began his saxophone training at the age of 13 and set foot in the professional world of jazz at the age of 18. By 2011, Abramov had played several times with various groups at some of Israel's leading jazz festivals. His musical portfolio includes collaborations with Odean Pope, Ester Rada, Pete Lockett, Roland Guerin, Shai Maestro, Per Mathisen, Marina Maximilian, Heinrich von Kalnein and more.

Paul Kleber was born in Berlin and started playing cello and drums at a young age, before he chose his main instrument, the double bass. He studied classical bass at the Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ Berlin and later jazz bass at the Universität der Künste Berlin. He played and recorded with Jazzanova, Sebastian Studnitzky, British band Fink, Micatone, Nylon, JazzIndeed and Lisa Bassenge.

Tobias Backhaus was born in Darmstadt, Germany, on January 8 1984. He took up the drums at the age of 5 and has subsequently been studying under the guideance of jazz masters such as Keith Copeland, Ari Hoenig, Jim Black, John Hollenbeck and Jeff Ballard. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in jazz performance from the Jazz-Institute Berlin. His individual approach and stylistic diversity – from traditional jazz to free improvisation, modern classical music and beyond – as well as his ability to effortlessly move between those different worlds have made him one of the most in-demand young drummers on the German jazz scene. Tobias has been working with artists such as Torsten de Winkel, Till Brönner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tony Lakatos, Carlos Bica, Jiggs Whigham, Gwilym Simcock, Peter Weniger, Frank Chastenier and Ack van Rooyen, the Dresden Symphonic Orchestra, the NDR Big Band, the Berlin Jazz Orchestra and many others.
