Das Roland Satterwhite Quartet wurde 2025 gegründet und präsentiert eigene Kompositionen, die die harmonische und rhythmische Vielfalt des modernen Jazz mit einer speziell für die Violine entwickelten melodischen und dynamischen Klangsprache verbinden. Inspiriert von Musikern wie Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett und Kurt Rosenwinkel sowie unterschiedlichen Violinentraditionen aus Osteuropa und Amerika stellt Satterwhite die Violine selbstbewusst in den Kontext des zeitgenössischen Jazz, ohne sie als Ersatz für ein Blasinstrument zu behandeln.
Für dieses Konzert im Zig Zag wird Satterwhite von David Preston an der Gitarre, Makar Novikov am Kontrabass und Ivars Arutyunyan am Schlagzeug begleitet. Als besonderer Gast erweitert die Pianistin Olivia Trummer das Quartett zum Quintett. Fünf herausragende Musiker der europäischen Jazzszene treffen hier erstmals in dieser Konstellation aufeinander.
Der Violinist und Sänger Roland Satterwhite ist unter anderem als Musiker des Moka Efti Orchestra und Sänger des Berliner Trios Tolyqyn bekannt. Sein Weg zum Jazz führte über Bluegrass, zentral- und südamerikanische Musik, Flamenco und die Musik Django Reinhardts. Während seiner Zeit in New York spielte er vor allem kubanische und brasilianische Musik; wichtige Einflüsse auf seine Improvisation und Harmonik sind Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Michael Brecker und Kurt Rosenwinkel.
Der britische Gitarrist David Preston ist seit vielen Jahren in der europäischen Jazzszene aktiv. Als gefragter Sideman und Bandleader bewegt er sich zwischen modernem Jazz, improvisierter Musik und eigenen Projekten und ist regelmäßig in unterschiedlichen internationalen Besetzungen zu hören.
Die Pianistin, Sängerin und Komponistin Olivia Trummer zählt zu den interessantesten deutschen Jazzmusikerinnen ihrer Generation. Nach ihrem Studium von klassischem Klavier und Jazz in Stuttgart setzte sie ihre Ausbildung an der Manhattan School of Music in New York fort. Sie veröffentlichte bislang elf eigene Alben und trat unter anderem in der Carnegie Hall, beim Montreux Jazz Festival, beim London Jazz Festival und im Blue Note Tokyo auf. Seit vielen Jahren arbeitet sie außerdem regelmäßig mit Kurt Rosenwinkel zusammen.
Der aus Moskau stammende Kontrabassist Makar Novikov spielte mit Musikern wie Jimmy Cobb, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath und Lew Tabackin. Nach seinem Umzug nach Europa 2022 arbeitete er unter anderem mit Rosario Giuliani, Antonio Faraò und Maurizio Giammarco und unterrichtete an der Siena Jazz University. Seit 2024 lebt Novikov in Berlin und ist regelmäßig in Projekten von Alex Sipiagin, Isfar Sarabski, Carl Winther und Olivia Trummer zu hören. 2025 erschien mit „Long Journey“ sein Debütalbum als Bandleader.
Der lettische Schlagzeuger Ivars Arutyunyan ist seit vielen Jahren in der europäischen Jazz- und Improvisationsszene aktiv. Nach Stationen in Kopenhagen und Paris lebt er heute in Berlin und arbeitete unter anderem mit Seamus Blake, Greg Osby, Logan Richardson, Jerry Bergonzi, Jesse van Ruller und Carsten Dahl. Er spielte in mehr als 30 Ländern und wurde 2022 mit dem Großen Lettischen Musikpreis ausgezeichnet.
The Roland Satterwhite Quartet was founded in 2025 and presents original compositions combining the harmonic and rhythmic diversity of modern jazz with a melodic and dynamic language developed specifically for the violin. Inspired by musicians such as Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett and Kurt Rosenwinkel, as well as different violin traditions from Eastern Europe and the Americas, Satterwhite confidently places the violin in the context of contemporary jazz without treating it as a substitute for a horn.
For this concert at the Zig Zag, Satterwhite is joined by David Preston on guitar, Makar Novikov on double bass and Ivars Arutyunyan on drums. Special guest Olivia Trummer expands the quartet to a quintet on piano. Five outstanding musicians from the European jazz scene come together in this line-up for the first time.
Violinist and singer Roland Satterwhite is known among other things as a member of the Moka Efti Orchestra and singer of the Berlin trio Tolyqyn. His path to jazz led through bluegrass, Central and South American music, flamenco and the music of Django Reinhardt. During his years in New York, he primarily performed Cuban and Brazilian music, while Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Michael Brecker and Kurt Rosenwinkel became important influences on his approach to improvisation and harmony.
British guitarist David Preston has been active on the European jazz scene for many years. A sought-after sideman and bandleader, his work spans modern jazz, improvised music and his own projects, and he regularly performs in a variety of international line-ups.
Pianist, singer and composer Olivia Trummer is regarded as one of the most interesting German jazz musicians of her generation. After studying classical piano and jazz in Stuttgart, she continued her studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. She has released eleven albums as a leader and performed at venues and festivals including Carnegie Hall, Montreux Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival and Blue Note Tokyo. She has also worked regularly with Kurt Rosenwinkel for many years.
Moscow-born double bassist Makar Novikov has performed with musicians including Jimmy Cobb, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath and Lew Tabackin. After moving to Europe in 2022, he worked with musicians including Rosario Giuliani, Antonio Faraò and Maurizio Giammarco and taught at Siena Jazz University. Based in Berlin since 2024, Novikov regularly performs in projects led by Alex Sipiagin, Isfar Sarabski, Carl Winther and Olivia Trummer. After periods in Copenhagen and Paris, he is now based in Berlin and has worked with musicians including Seamus Blake, Greg Osby, Logan Richardson, Jerry Bergonzi, Jesse van Ruller and Carsten Dahl. He has performed in more than 30 countries and received the Latvian Grand Music Award in 2022.
